I have been following the story of the game since the beginning. But I got burned on two other crowd funded games. So I had stayed away, but a some of the guys in a group I play Arma 3 with were like it is free to play for a couple of weeks. Had to see what the real state of the game was for myself and was completely blown away. So I wound up buying.

But after playing with them for a bit a realized our goals in the game were a bit different. They like to haul and stack coin, and occasionally do missions. I'm a combat pilot and I want to brawl with a group that understands combat mechanics.

Arma 3

I began researching orgs to potentially fly with. One of the searches I did was about organized pvp events your name came up. I looked at your calendar and saw training pilots for combat was a the main focus I saw.

First opf all welcome to the forum!

"I'm a combat pilot and I want to brawl with a group that understands combat mechanics."

Ok, you are defenetly on the wrong place!
We have an active combat division (yellow jacket) that comprehend all of the conbat aspect carryed out in TEST, be they shp combat, ground FPS combat, escort duty or on-ship security, but to be honest if you'll espcet a coordinated gameplay likt the one on ARMA you'll be disappointed.
Right now, do to bug and also the on-going varietion of the game combat is very basic, for example we don't have establish squad or party (even if the CFT attendant are more or less always the same). Same thing for tacctics and squad coordination and I mean sadly becouse caming from game like MachWarrior online that is all based on squad coordination and tactics the lack of them really has his weight.

Joke aside and deteiled pinted out best suggestion is join us on some event, both for ship combat and FPS one (the include both of them most of the time...) on saturady to know the people and play the game, at the actual state of SC there are a LOT of thing you need to learn the hard way, so having a group of player that can guide you is the best to "get up to speed" in a short time.

Oh, by the way, TST is not a combat dedicated ORG, we do everything, and even if the combat part is what interest you mostly I'll sugest you to try out even other aspect of the game: beteween some mission is nice to have some relax time mining and gathering credit for the next ship, armor suite, or weapon...

No, i'm not expecting it to be super organized. But with the current cap at 50 player per server. The only way to have a fight with significant numbers is for everyone to be in a party. I have tried out most of the game play loops that are in current game.

Yeah, I rented both starter ships before purchasing the game, and quickly realized they were not great... Also, in testing I found that flying a light was not the most enjoyable due to the amount maneuvering that was required to kill a single target. So I wound up opting for a medium. So I purchased the Hornet. I have been really pleased with the burst and tank.

yeah, PvE, medium does a better job, more firepower. PvP or Flight v Flight the poor tank is the underdog against a more agile light fighter

Thank you for the heads up. I will work on getting a light. I'm curious does that still hold true as things scale. Like with 20vs20 are you focusing in separate targets or is it like Eve main fleet where you focus a single 1 at a time as a group?

That really depends on the situation. 20 vs 20? When you focus on 1 target, what are the other 19 gonna do? Base rule: stay alive. If 1 guy gets focused by the other 19, get the hell evasive, keep them busy as long as possible, gain the upper hand. That won't happen if you die.

Are there any glaring imbalances between the lights I should know about before buying one?
Gladius, Arrow, Hawk, Buccaneer, 325A, Avenger. The biggest lack of the lights really is firepower. Gladius and Arrow both have 3 S3. Gladius and Arrow both have a superior flight characteristic. Arrow better then Gladius, but the Arrow lacks 1 shield.
The Hawk has 4 S2 and 2 S1. The Bucc has 2 S1, 2 S3 and 1 S4. Both superior firepower, but you must manage the flight model.
The 325A has 2 S3 and 1 S4, just like the Avenger. Both zoom and boom fighters.
In my vision, the power of light fighters is not to get hit, therefor you need superior maneuverability. Others have proven me wrong, so it really comes down to pilots able to fly their ship at its best potential.
My best advise would be: try them out, check which flight style suits you best, then focus on it.

The 3250A maybe, the Avenger has a good mobility if you know how to handle it... while the 300 series are ship more focus on the straight line speed and works well on the Z&B gameplay, the Avenger is a "more round" ship and can keep up with the more agile dedicated fighter like the Gladdius and eventually get an advantage on the Arrow do to the double shield and the superior firepower.

Weel this goes for every ship: don't get hit is better then have the hit being absorbed by the shields... small-medium fighter are just better on doing it and of corse pilot ability comes always into play...

My best advise would be: try them out, check which flight style suits you best, then focus on it.
I'll add to this: don't get turned down by few combat go wrong: some ship are more intuitive then other, some perform better with certain type of loadout and so on...
Give them time, and try them out for some thime before decide that some ship is not your kind of taste: CFT event are a good occasion for that, in TEST we have way more ship then pilot, there will be multiple player that can land you a fighter to try them out.

Also notice that the weapon choice of one player could not fit YOUR playstyle so listen to every advice, but follow blindly none of them, always try them out form yourself and tune, modify and adjust them by yourself. It's your ship, it need to fit YOUR playstyle and ability.😉

Thanks for taking the time to flesh it out. I am currently testing fighters out in arena commander to see which ones I like. Your guidance reminded me of a question. From your guys testing have you seen a benefits from multicrew combat ships versus solo pilots?

Ok, first of all: I'm not loggin onto AC from a while right now, but unless they tune it up the flight model into Ac is different from the PU. Also the limited space and the "arcade mode" AC is designed for (ammo and fuel refill on the go..) make it not 100% accurate for testing ship combat. Use it for a general feeling but try the ships into the PU for a final decision.

Concerning multicrew combat.... well this depend mostly on the ship.
Turret since 3.10 got buffed and ended up to actually being useful, so if you can have a ship, like for example the Cutlass, the Superhornet or the Hurricane, that have a turret for a second player, having one in it is not a bad decision, just add more fiirepower (actually a LOT of in the Hurricane).
For a co-pilot position at the moment looks kinda limited at helping finding the target and keep traking of them, this will change in the future as long ad CIG will introduce a more detailed gameplay for managing ships su-systems, but right now, is kinda useless.

The best advice that I can offer, is to do your research now, understand that periodically CIG shifts things for the sake of balancing the types of ships against each other & given the time of year, wait to purchase until the Anniversary sale / Interstellar Aerospace Expo at the end of Nov to get the best deals, availability & insurance possible on the new ship(s). They also often release 1 or more new ships during that event.
