Need some hanger advice - a "fighter" ship

I have CCU to one in buy back. I think the Ares Ion will probably be able to one-shot a light/medium fighter if they can get it targeted from long range, but will depend on how far it can target. I like the idea of being a ship 'sniper', but if you miss and get caught by a anything smaller than a Cutlass/Freelancer sized ship, I think you will most likely get FUBAR'd from there agility and not being able to bring that massive gun on them. But then again, it might be pretty nimble... Who knows 😆
Either of them are going to bring the pain on slow/static, or larger targets though.

It will be interesting to see how effective they do end up being against fighters given their intended target is larger ships.
I suspect much will depend on starting range. The single Size 5 on a Vanguard and especially the 4 size 4 on a Connie are extremely effective above 4000 meters. Most small and medium fighters go pop before they can get in range.

Yeah! I have noticed that you don't have to fly around as much to find your target on BH missions. Granted, I haven't played for a few months (couldn't even get out my bed without falling through the floor in the last patch!). So have found missions quicker to complete, bit kinda miss searching the asteroid fields for targets 👍

The problem is when they spawn, and where quantum dumps you. With my Vanguard, I tend to do a high speed pass on the marker, and pick them up just fine at 5+ when I turn around. :)

This will be more of an issue when stealth, ship sizes and scanners get more passes.

In regards to Ares vs small ships: CIG has been pretty clear that they want the Ares to be an Anti-Capital ship. I'm sure a skilled marksman could shred ships if they get some good shots off but I doubt that CIG will let an averagely skilled Ares pilot shred a Hornet in 2 seconds. (Also they said it is planned to handle closer to a Freelancer or Vanguard, so uh that might not be ideal for anything shorter range than 2km)

Don't get me wrong, Ares is a fucking cool ship (and definitely top of the list for "buy in game" for me) but I'd wait until it's out and balanced to do more than idle speculation on slapping Auroras at 8km off.


Sidenote: I want an Ares "Joker Engineering Special" with a S7 Distortion cannon please. Makes anything smaller than an Idris go night night with a few shots.

And how many times have we shown the flavor text hardly ever lives up to what the ship does?

And a 20mm cannon will turn a duck into paste, but good luck trying to hit it.

Also that's believing marketing at CIG which is traditionally very risky to do.

Don't get me wrong I'm sure the Ares can hold its own against something like a Vanguard or Hornet, but look how an Arrow can already circlejerk a Freelancer around and hide in its blind spots all day, and now imagine the Freelancer has only fixed guns. If the Ares is capable of obliterating small ships in a few seconds in addition to being an anti-capital platform then that just tosses the Rock/Paper/Scissors balancing right in the trash.

CIG has been very clear the Ares is intended as a Cap ship attack platform. You should not expect to be able to hit light fighters with the humongous gun.

I'm hoping that CIG will take some of the cargo bay of the Starfarers & install something similar to what's inside the Dur, but that it can be used to refine quantanium into quantum fuel for their tanks to be able to provide fuel for ships without having to go to some place to purchase it to then deliver it. I would say that modification would restore the original promise of those ships while also adding additional gameplay for mining ships to help achieve the goal.

Certainly players have been hating on the Star G since the invention of quantanium. They rightly feel they're place in game was edged out. Would be cool if they did just as you said.
