Shot a few connies with this during a mission, absolutely shredded them in just a few seconds. Funnily enough, smaller targets are much tougher. Guess that'll change once we get armor in game, though I think larger shields should also just have a flat damage negation per hit as this is just silly. It's as if shotguns were terrible at shooting ducks, but absolutely brilliant against tanks.

I don't think scatterguns were this powerful a month or two ago. I could've just missed it though, but it seems like they buffed the fire rate and damage a bit. That seems kinda unnecessary, if anything, scatterguns were already way OP. They might've increased the spread a bit, but... I don't know, just makes it easier to keep the shields of smaller ships down, and you can still hit with 80% of the pellets against connie and up, so... Well, I'll keep using scatterguns. Though it kinda feels like cheating.

P.S. Yes, those are gimballed scatterguns. I absolutely do not feel like aiming. At all. Under no circumstances. I just fly around, guns go Brrrrrr and stuff explodes.:like:

Connie’s have major shield holes, especially around the engines, scatter guns have enough projectiles for at least some to find their way through and shred the weak connections the Connie’s have around their engines.
Yes, but that's just an added bonus. Constellations have just 43k shields stock, that's ~11k per shield face. Connie is large enough of a target that you'll likely hit with nearly all of the pellets if not all, so while the full dps would rise from 6.8k to 9.3k, let's be generous and say you miss with 20% of the pellets, you're still doing 5.44k to 7.44k damage. No matter how you look at it, it takes just couple of seconds to drop a shield face, and even if you're hitting all of the shield faces at once, it'll take 10 seconds or less to drop them all. And then the ship blows up.

And while upgrading the shields is an option, it can't net more than roughly 8 extra seconds, Sukoran just about doubles the shield hp, though it does get rid of the continuous regen, but the more you fire the more dps you're doing, so doubling the shield hp doesn't quite double the TTK.

So, yeah. Scatterguns are just way too OP atm. Particularly against larger ships. They really need to introduce some sort of flat damage reduction here, and not just on the armor but also on shields.

Interesting thoughts here - combined the pellets have maximum pain in the arse potential on shields but what happens once they get through the shields to the armour (once it is implemented)?

When hitting a shield face, the damage combines as it all gets pit against one single generator. If that generator has 90 capacity and all the pellets combine to 100 damage that shield is vanquished - but with armour, one laser bolt with 100 damage does that all to the one point of the armour plate and can punch a hole in it... but 20 pellets spread out across that Armour all doing at 5dps... well, none will hit in the same spot and unlike the shield generator it won't combine... so effectively although it's hit many places all at once, it's only done 5 damage still...?

The problem I see here is basically that, take dominance-2 scatterguns, AFAIK they do up to 103 damage per pellet when the guns are running hot. That's all sorts of lots. CF-227 Badger only does 59 damage per shot, Scorpion GT-215 does 21 damage per shot, and if you go one size down, well, size 1 cannons do around 100 damage per shot. Even size 2 cannons only do around 175 ish damage per shot, that's not a huge difference to dominance-2. I mean, could be they carefully pick some cutoff point at like, 150 damage, where the Size 2 cannons penetrate and do lots of damage, and dominance-2 just simply doesn't penetrate. But I think it'd still be kinda silly to have Dominance-2 just entirely whack the shields while the cannon doesn't do jack against them, and then turn the situation on its head against armor. I mean, it's supposed to be the distortion guns that are supposed to whack shields, dominance-2 kinda taken that role here.

Can't argue with that... Perhaps it's the answer for the fast small ships like the Razor and M50 which can get in fast and close but not hit especially hard?

If that's the case, I'd love to know why they put 4 of the things on the back of my standard Starfarer? That's a iffy loadout for a ship who's "maneuverable" speed limit is currently about 80m/s what have I got to hope, the ships with weapons ranged at 2000m fly within 50m of my scatterguns?

All good fun.
