This is great news!

All the GPUs are being snatched up by miners because ETH is flying to $2000 at the moment.

Nerfing the hashrates should help bring this particular card back to affordable levels.

I suppose it just forces a split as the new 3060 will be crap for mining but they're also creating a new line of the 3060 just for mining. So there will be wafers going towards non-gaming cards and still cause a shortage. And scalpers will buy those up, so nothing will really change.

Can't wait for the flood of ex-miner cards when all this crypto craze crashes (and burns, as in insurance fraud for the bigger farms that go bankrupt overnight), again.

I don't think they'll use the "full" GPU of the 3000 series for that, proobably the'll redirect some of the low end cipset that came out so that they'll be able to sel those at higter prices compared to what could be a nerferd seres whitout, for example, RT cores (that I don't think are used in mining...)

I bought a 3070 off ebay and then saw a guy talking about mining with it while you're not gaming so I gave it a try. It does actually make some decent money per day, nothing to get you rich, but it offsets the increased price of scalped prices. So I figured that while mining is paying out well I'd get a 3080 and have two cards in my machine mining at once. They'll pay themselves off in ~200 days if things stay the way they are now. And I can always sell off the 3070 so I can keep the 3080. The two make about $15-20 a day.

I know the "mining" variants will not have display outputs, so they are cheaper to make. But I have no idea at all how much of the actual card "features" will be included. From what I know it only uses the memory chips, so they may be able to get away without RT cores or even trimming back the GPU processor itself.

Although it's hard to tell if that'd make any difference at all other than making them cheaper as all the cards must be made on full sized wafer chips. The silicon board the pieces attach to. And I know those are also very limited in supply. So it may make no difference at all in the number of cards that can go out the door if the board itself is the most limited piece. Or even if it's the memory chips that are holding things back. Let's hope it's RT cores or the GPU chip that's scarce as maybe we'll get some uptick in availability.

That being said, I do already have a new card, so I suppose I don't have much investment in whether it'll help or not. But maybe them working things out now will help in future releases such as the 4000 series. I sincerely hope they don't botch that release as much as this one.

An attempt has been made.

Whether it works or not, I don't know - that is for time to tell and haxtors to dictate.

From a Retailers perspective whether they sell to The Players of Games or the Miners of Hash doesn't really mean anything - a sale is a sale and $x of one persons money is exactly the same as $x of anothers and how could they tell what the end users intention will be anyway at point of sale....?

I heared the AMD 6000 series just wasn't as good at returning a decent Hash rate as the Nvidia offerings, however that may have been rumors - but if they weren't false, that would most definitely put the mouth of the Mining funnel squarely on Nvidias doorstep and that funnel sucks like a vacuum cleaner...

Yes, a sale is a sale... but if your product isn't able to reach its intended market, a void will appear in that market - which someone else will step in and fill.

Nvidia are victims of their own success and if they don't do something it will change the very kind of company they are with the market dictating to them who and what they exist for, marching orders it seems they are not yet willing to accept, at least for the moment... The 1050 coming back.... the 2060 coming back... attempts to plug holes which others will only be too willing to plug for them if they don't pay attention....

I don't see 3060 HashNerf as a move to give game players a break, I see it as a move to defend their market, position and the very kind of company that they are in the first place.

Apparently the Frisbee name used to make pies? One day will hash miners say "Apparently Nvidia used to make Graphics Cards?"

How much do you pay for electricity? in KwH?

I have solar panels so a good chunk of my electricity is made by those. But I do live in California, so the base starts at $0.23 and I think it goes up to $0.37 at the max. But even at that rate these two cards are good enough that they make money. As I said, I won't get rich off them, but I will be able to pay the cards off. Then after I'm done I can sell the 3070 and keep the 3080. Who knows how long mining will last right now as they're insanely good payout.

I basically used mining as an excuse to convince my wife it was a good idea for me to buy a 3080 as I had already gotten a 3070 because it was more manageable money wise. If the only thing I get out of this in the end is an extremely cheap 3080, then I'm happy.

That is the question. Technically the 3080 won't be obsolete until the 5000 series since it's a pretty high end card of this series. But it also only has that 10gb of VRAM which is a limiting factor. The 3070 is a different story, but I think people throw around the word Obsolete too much. I got on ebay and sold my old 780ti. I see my 980ti going for $250-300+. And for games that don't require a huge amount of GPU power behind them, they're still good cards.

Fortnite, Overwatch, F2P games, Rimworld, Indie games. These things can be run pretty easily. Sure it won't run the brand new hotness, but some people don't play those games. And I think Cyberpunk is 100% the new "Crysis" benchmark game. Unless another developer just goes stupid and builds a game to be difficult to run, we will definitely see any new cards that come out in the next 2-6 years asking how it runs Cyberpunk.

Cause remember, even a 3090 can't run Cyberpunk on Ultra-Ray Tracing without DLSS above a solid 60 fps.

I'm still using my RTX 2080.

The RTX 3000 series is quite a bump up in performance, but I might just wait for the RTX 4000 series at this point.

Having thought the above out loud, the solution so the GPU mining demand issue now seems simple - come up with a cheaper more efficient way to crunch Hash. But perhaps another way would be being able to better

I thought the new can it run game was Flight Simulator?

I forgot about this game! Even with a 3090 I've heard people getting crap framerate. But I'd like to point out that most people have heard of/played Cyberpunk. Whereas Flight Simulator seems more like an enthusiast game.

MSFS have always been very demanding games on launch but more on CPU side than GPU. Also it's an ever changing beast this time, with every patch we get better or worse framerates cos they are tweaking and optimizing vs graphics fidelity. Upon launch I had nearly 60fps with all set to ultra, but it was constantly hitching when I turned the camera. Then after some patch I got 90fps and no hitching, but it looked worse also. Now after some more patches I get the same 60ish fps, better visuals, and almost no hitching. I'm on a 2060S.

Tldr.: Msfs is not a good game for performance measure.

About cards becoming obsolete... a 1060 is still a solid card for almost any game at 1080p, if you are happy running at medium-high settings. According to the steam survey most gamers have that still or equivalent AMD card. Can one really.say it's obsolete?

Wow! What has happened to Tom's Hardware? That qualifies as the worst-formatted journalism I've seen, and there are some bad ones out there.
I've followed the Italian versioni of Tom's HW and theyy quality has dropped significally since 2019/late-2018, more ads and crappy content then valuable information.
Right now the best to surce for tenical info is search for dedicated YT channles.

Speaking of good Yt channels... here something on the subject of the new Nvidia "mining GPU":

That may very well be a thing that happens. It's mostly something fun to do, the amount I want to get from this is nothing compared to my job, so if it doesn't work it's not like I can't make my mortgage. And I've already made $300 so if it just holds at this profitability for another month or two then I'm happy.
