I am just waiting on Intel and AMD to ditch the x86 architecture. Wonder if Apple will cause the pivot we need on the windows side.
The M1 is certainly an interesting chip. It can outdo x86 architecture in... 5nm... lol, no other way to put it. If the price point wasn't up in nosebleed territory...

I have to make a decision. New ships, or a Mac? I just paid for two laptops since June (for work), so my wife won't be happy either way... Hmm. Sounds like I might maybe have nothing to loose.
I have the 12 inch Ipad pro, not the one with the m1 chip but the one before it. I use it every day, I can't say i have any regrets with the purchase. The new one has a 120hz OLED screen i think as well.

The M1 isn't much faster than the competition, but it includes 4 "efficiency" cores it runs during most computations that run far cooler and use less power then the other 8 cores. Apple started tbhis years ago and it is surprising no one has followed suit. Great processor for iPads, small spacecraft, anything where battery life matters.

5nm processor chips have been used in cell phones and tablets for several years now, but this is a bit of a departure from the current Intel or AMD tech Apple has been using. In fact, other than the price it might be what Apple needs. There's been a kind of convergence going on between cell phones and tablets on one hand, and for lack of better words, PC's on the other. Apple has been a large part of that push almost since it started.
I remember the excitement that John Sculley (who remembers him? The CEO of Apple that ousted Jobs) generated with a book he wrote, outlining the "knowledge navigator", and how it could change the way we do computing. The book was way before it's time. Current cellular tech is as close as we've gotten to fulfilling the original vision. Lately, the roadblock has mostly been heat generation instead of the limits of transistor density, but this M1 really looks like it's a good answer for the hear and now.
