The Ghost Bear Legacy expansion pack to Mechwarrior 2 released in 1995, included 14 new Mechs. One of them, the Black Knight; became my favorite ride of all time. It was a Heavy Mech (80T) but very fast. By dropping just a tad of the standard armor it was suddenly as fast as a Medium Mech, which is relatively hard to hit, and yet was twice as hard to kill. Mine was outfitted with 14 medium pulse lasers and no other weapons, so could not fight at long range. Didn't matter. It was fast enough to close range in seconds, and do the ultimate brawler dance.

One of the tricks of running a Heavy Mech at medium speeds was to install a single jump jet in the lower torso. This was not enough to jump or to fly, but it was enough to make the Mech rotate at super-fast speed in order to outmaneuver other Mechs. It carried lots of coolers so could fire continuously for more than ten seconds, but at short to medium range it only needed 2 seconds for its 14 lasers to kill any target, even with all torso shots.

Black Knights rule.

I had only computers in my youth, so I'd say Sid Meier's Pirates ! (the one from 87)
Glad to be in the company of other 80s gamers.

For retro game that most sucked me in at the time, I'd go with Legend of Zelda on Nintendo in 1886. I certainly loved Wing Commander on PC (MSDOS, wow!) in 1990 too.

For retro game most played ever, that would be Sid Meiers first Civilization from 1991, which I've kept playing since through all the later Brian Reynolds adaptations.

Wow, you beat us all that's retro retro gaming 😅
Is that the one where you could make the Babbage Difference Engine calculate to extrapolate the answer "80085"?

Street Rod, msdos.
And ofc transport tycoon
I'm still playing Transport Tycoon. There is an open source project version of it called Open TTD. I've got one map to the year 2042 and all of the town's have merged almost into one Megacity. You can send a bus from the coast on the bottom left to the coast on the upper right, haven't tried it yet but I can only imagine the profit that route would make...

Yep, I got it installed on every single device that can run it, including phone and tablet. It's also now on steam for freeeee!
As far as I know, that bus would operate at a terrible loss, as passengers have the (second?) highest depreciation factor by time spent in transit (goods being the worst maybe?). So even though it's a ridiculous distance in tiles covered, the bus is too slow to turn a decent profit, if any on such long trips. That's why trains and planes pay the best. Coal is the slowest to lose it's value by time, so it's always my go-to for starting out.
Ofc all of this can be modded to hell, I got a map that I started in 1850 with horse drawn carriages that had a top speed of 10kph and gravel roads, with the loss by time values set slower so I would stand a chance of turning a profit.

That's awesome, I usually make a spinal rail line the length of the map and get all forests feeding in to just one sawmill. The challenge is then getting all the goods offloaded, if a lot of forests get to the max 2,295 tonnes a month it becomes quite the challenge :D
