Hey all,

Thanks for stopping in. So I'm downsizing the fleet and have two lti tokens sitting in buyback that I can make use of. I've been going back and forth on getting rid of the Odyssey as the only crew I will have will be y'all, and for someone who intends to play a bit solo, I've got too many big things. I'm sitting on an Endeavor, Merchantman, Starliner, Corsair and the Odyssey. The Odyssey does say it'll be for 1-6, but I just get the feeling it's going to fall in line with most of the rest of my fleet and need bodies to work well. Can't ditch the Merchantman, got it for 250 and don't wanna lose that value, plus it's sick. Starliner and Corsair are my two "must have" ships and the Endeavor will likely offer a lot of use in the next 20 years. a

That said, I've got 115 in store credit, plus melting the Odyssey, I'd be able to grab an Apollo (the cheaper one of the two), a Sentinel and an MSR. I picked those ships primarily because they seem soloable, benefitting from more folks but not requiring them to be mostly usable. I looked at the 400i but the Corsair fills its role. I don't think the MSR and Corsair have overlap. The Apollo should provide fun gameplay loops, or at least a respawn spot for some TESTies out in the 'verse. I'm asking because I know we have limited buyback tokens and I only modify my fleet once or twice a year. I'm pretty bad about staying in the loop, I come in for doses and there's just so much that changes it's hard to keep up with.

TLDR - Swapping the Odyssey for a Sentinel + Apollo + MSR , good idea or not? Other suggestions? I did look at a Raft but it's one dimensional and with the MSR, the SCU for trading is about the same + the MSR gets more gameplay loops down the line.

I appreciate y'alls time, you folks are always helpful in here!

Thank you,
Tac

Hi, cool query!

Is your Oddy a stand-alone ship or is it CCU'd from something else? If it's stand alone you can melt it and revive it later if it turns out to be something you want which would be perfect, but if it's CCU'd you'll loose it forever which makes it harder to justify doing that.

Also, what modules do you have for the Endeavour? It will be very customisable but really only if you have the modules (or attain them in game) for example the Oddy has a small hangar but the Endeavour will have a slightly larger one capable of carrying a couple of Cutless... If you have a hangar...

CCU'd, and that's been part of my back and forth. I just feel like it'll be one more big ship sitting in the hangar. "Space base is cool tho!" Yeah, but long treks in the black on a giant ship, lots of work to do for the lonely spacefarer. The Endeavor has biodome, hangar and general research lab.

Passenger transport, some combat but not tons of it, trade and some exploration. Don't have much interest in mining, refining, etc. Who knows down the line though, when they add more systems in! I'm just going off experience in other space games, x series, elite etc.

None of the ships you mentioned, as replacing your Odyssey, take you to that goal. It might be a good idea to hold where you are until ships show up that fill that goal.

How do they not? The MSR is cargo + data/smuggling, the sentinel is a combat ship, Apollo doesn't really fit in with anything but med gameplay is on the way and surely it'll make some form of profit. I mentioned transports, trade, some combat.

That's a nice Endeavour setup, I have a hangar and supercollider for mine and it's probably the ship which will become people's Space Base... I know it'll be mine. The BMM and Starliner are also wonderful I know what you mean about too many big toys.

Hmmm it's a tough one...

Right now the Oddy is the only ship which will have the tools to fuel itself on a walkabout and with 100 systems planned for the final game, that's something to ponder if you want but if not it's not going to be utilised much...

Yeah, my thoughts were basically this: Odyssey is an expedition vessel made for long treks into the black. I'd likely not stay out weeks at a time, personally, and would more likely do a few days tops. So the Corsair should fill that role just fine, explorer lite with piracy capabilities. The ships I'd trade for all gain the solo pilot ability and 2/3 would get lti as a bonus. Would likely put it on the sentinel and the msr as they're probably the most expensive in the end. Still not sold on the apollo. Thought about the 600i too, but it's another one of those, borderline too big. I know folks say it's nice to solo/biggest soloable ship, but it is getting reworked.

Your primary concern is Passenger transport. They don't do that. Sure they do other things, but that isn't your primary use case.

Pax transport is already handled by the Starliner. There were other loops listed after. I don't think there are many of us here that are solely interested in only one mode of gameplay. Not to say those that are, are wrong for it. Just isn't my style, that's for sure. No worries, I appreciate your input all the same!

Edit: I think you maybe just trolling me, lol? You quoted me twice and both quotes mentioned combat and trade.

If you melt an Odyssey, especially if it was a standalone (more credit than optimised upgrade and ability to buy it back if you change your mind later) and adding your remaining credits, you'll have more than enough to test multiple ships till you are satisfied according to your preferred game loops. You will figure the ships you want I'm sure.

Sounds like the Oddy really isn't going to be useful for you...

One thing I would recommend before dropping IRL money on a ship is "Fly before you buy" if you have not been able to get a go in them as yet.
I know some people swear the MSR is the best thing on the face of earth but I got lost inside... the chess board is cool, but you need someone to play against.
I know some people who swear the Vanguard line are the best of the best but I also know at least one TESTie who can't hit crap all with it (me, a Sentinel).

Invictus is at the end of the month so you should be able to test a loooot of combat ships for free to have a real feel for what you might be able to pick up... just beware as is Alpha nothing is set in stone and come balancing the Mary Sue ship of today may become the Drake Sanitary Solution (B.U.C.K.E.T*) tomorrow.

I'll say yes for a different reason: Both the Sentinel and MSR are great ships for you to use, even solo, RIGHT NOW in the 'Verse! Compared to the loaners for the Ody, which I believe are the Carrack, Kore, and Nomad, well the Nomad is really the only decently useful solo of the bunch short of using the Carrack to haul. I WOULD suggest taking the Carrack out for a few spins before you melt the Ody, just to get a better feel/understanding of what a mulitcrew ship of that size is like, but then yeah melt that beast and turn it into something that you'll actually bother hitting that 'Retrieve' button on the ASOP menu for regularly!

That's good advice - if you can't find a use for the Carrot currently at your disposal you'll not find a use for the Oddy either.

I asked what your primary goal was.

The Starliner is the top end passenger transport. If passenger transport is your primary goal, then you will want lower tier passenger transport to go with the Starliner. Perhaps a Connie Phoenix or 600i. Solve your primary goal first. I'll bet there are other passenger ships coming.

Your Merchantman handles cargo running and cargo running is way down your list. Data running and smuggling aren't even on your list. If you want Cargo running higher up your list, then I recommend waiting for the cargo refactor. Right now the cargo sweet spot is around 100 SCU, but I don't expect that to remain. Note the Phoenix covers both passenger and cargo in that range.

If you want combat, which on your list was an also ran, go with an inexpensive carrier fighter. You can move it, with your current fleet, or have one of us carry you. The Vanguard series is great, don't get me wrong, I have one, but based on your fleet and goals, it doesn't appear to fit as well as a Gladius, Arrow or F7C Hornet.

Exploration is on your list of secondary goals. Maybe the 600i and get the exploration module for it once that becomes available.

You don't have to take my advice. You don't have to justify your choices to me either.

You asked for advice, my recomendation is to wait and maybe turn the store credit into a carrier fighter.

Awesome input! Thank you very much for your time! You said my current fleet could move something like a Hornet. Is that based on the assumption of the Merchantman being able to move vessels like the defender? I know the odyssey has a hangar but if it gets the axe, that’s that. I’ve gone back and forth on the hornet a lot to be completely honest. The only thing I didn’t like about it was the lack of a bed. That said, if used like you mentioned, that wouldn’t matter in the least.
