Budget head-tracking setup for Star Citizen.

I figured there's likely to be a few people who want head-tracking for the game, but a Tobii is out of their reach, so here's a cheaper alternative:

The video demonstrates it in Elite, but is applicable to Star Citizen as well.

I bought Track Hat a while back. Simple, effective, inexpensive.

That's cool. SC also has a tracker which uses your existing web-cam so no extra cost if you're even cheaper like me:

I've never gotten that to work worth a damn, and my camera has all the desirable specs they recommended. I guess I sit to far from the screen.

It's possible it's just not working right now. 3.5 was a looooong time ago.

I've tried pretty much all of 'em, FaceTraknoIR, SC's built in face tracker, a TrackIR both with the hat reflectors and IR leds, and now the Tobii. And in the end, I wish I'd never wasted time or money on anything else; the the Tobii just works, perfectly. No issues with lighting, windows, wearing glasses, putting shit on my head, etc. I just hit the hot key to turn it on when I want it, and off when I don't. It is, in a word, amazeballz. Now I don't want to discourage anyone from trying out the free options to see if you like the functionality in general. But if you do, and decide it's something you want to use regularly, and have any glitchy issues that disrupt your experience, then I'd suggest waiting for a sale and springing for the Tobii, as it Just. Plain. Works! Best way I can describe it was sorta like putting on an Oculus for the first time after I'd "played some VR" by slipping a Samsung phone into those goofy face clamps. . .

Funny Tobii story. I've wanted one for a long time, but I had a bad cataract in my left eye, so I put it off until I had the surgery. Finally took care of it last November and let it heal until late March, when I bought my Tobii. I had been playing with it for a few days, and one day I stop off at Home Depot on the way home from work. I'm walking out of the store when suddenly, this huge oil slick explodes in my left eye! I panicked, and immediately made an appointment with my ophthalmologist for the next day. He was very concerned after examining me and made me an appointment with a retina specialist for the same day, saying I had suffered a hemorrhage which usually meant a torn or detached retina. Well, I stopped whimpering long enough to ask him if infrared light could cause this. He said no and why do you ask. So here I am, a 66 year old kid, explaining Star Citizen, DCS and Tobii eye tracking to one of the most intelligent people I've ever met. When I finished, he said "well, Captain Dark Matter Gunslinger, when I carved that cataract out of your head, I was using a LASER! you get more infrared light from nature then you do from that toy. No, this usually happens to boxers and old people." Anyway, no detectable tear or detachment for the retina, but I go back every Friday for a follow up and now the doctor looks at me funny.

P.S. Using the Tobii again. It really does work great.
