So probably the dumbest question ever, but I'm drunk (yay army functions. "You will be here, you will drink, and you will have fun. Oh yeah, don't drink and drive!") And my GAFF is about as low as can be. So:

Caterpillar vs Carrack. Two ships, not even close in utility. One for exploration, one for liberating cargo from the depths of the deep dark.

Which will be ready first? What do y'all prefer? And why?

Ready first will be Cat. They've said people are working hard on it and the Carrack would be done soon-ish.

I prefer the Carrack. I'm not interested in a pirate cargo ship. If I want to do piracy I actually want to try it in a non-Drake ship for the lulz. Imagine a Reclaimer demanding your cargo and money, then having some SHornet friends blow them up so you can munch the ship.

As I am going to haul some cargo I would go for the Cat, its modules could also create quite the home base for me too... i would expect multiple Cats to be harnessed together to make a mobile home base too, as the command pod can take off on its own. The Carrak nice as it is only interested me for its Snub bay. That said, i don't think i am going to be too big on crew so a Connie Taurus is probably going to be my max ship size. I'll take passengers, joy riders and people who want to come along but employing crew npc and players alike is not appealing to me at the moment. That S4 manned turret had better be lockable in a forward position and fireable from the pilot seat :)

I always enjoyed games where i can turn a tidy profit running commodities, built quite the empire in X2 once i heard about how profitable Silicon could be, and set up a self sufficient base in Presidents End building lasertowers which i would then place at the mouth of the gates leading to the east and the south to dispatch pirates coming through but made my credits playing the Xenon Invasion missions. My Paranid Odysseus decked out in shockwave generators... No mere K could stand against the good ship Reduce To Ashes.

Carrack - reminds me of the Prometheus...at least a little bit :)

I would love to own one, but am not sure if I will upgrade my Connie lateron because a) of the extended crew which is needed to operate her efficiently and b) because of her costs.

Caterpillar I don't like very much because...I dunno, seems to me like a hunchback. No nice design elements for my liking.

I love the design of the Carrack. The release of the Starfarer has only made my spaceship boner even harder to see the hangar-ready state for the Carrack. I anticipate the ruining of at least one pair of pants that day.

Sorry, they've already confirmed that docking multiple ships will require them to remain stationary or tear apart the docking collars. However, you could create a jinky space station by docking them all and if you need to move simply undock and fly to new destination and redock.

The Caterpiller will be ready first as it will be in SQ42
Perhaps I'll go Cat, then do the upgrade to Carrack. I kinda wanna try them all.

The modularity is a huge factor for me. That's what I find so appealing about the Cat.

It does have that look. I love the Carrack. But I'm pretty damn sure I only want one larger ship. Decisions decisions.

I concur. Hugely. Massive ship wood. I'm praying I get to walk her hull and halls and corridors before too long. It'll be a wet dream.
I have a CCU bought to Carrack. I Think I'll play with the funds until she's ready.

Caterpillar will 100% be ready before the Carrack, it's currently being whiteboxed while the Carrack doesn't even have a single box yet. Cry me a river Carrack fanboys, I've been waiting since 2012 ya goofs. WAIT YOUR DAMN TURN YA WHIPPERSNAPPERS.

As far as which is cooler, well it depends. For my needs and playstyle the Cat is much more up my alley as a modular attack freighter. It's ugly, but it's the GOOD kinda ugly. No frills, no fuss, no muss. Here to do a job, without all the addons.

Exploration is not really what draws me to SC, but the Carrack is definitely a cool looking ship, and probably the best overall exploration vessel you can get your hands on. Certainly capable of holding it's own in a pinch combat-wise, however it's probably not going to be as flexible as a Cat.

Different strokes for different folks. Carracks a mighty fine ship for sure, but Papa Squeaks loves his Caterpillar something fierce.

Yeah, ugly indeed. I think that's appealing. I want a ship that's battered and weathered and has character. I'll be checking the Cat out for sure when she drops. 'Modular attack freighter': I like that. I'll certainly play with the Cat. Yup. For sure.

They both look like great ships, I can see either being the focus of a happy space life! I am sadly reluctant to buy too big a ship just because of lack of time to play i.e. cannot get enough value out of them. Plus the developers comments on crewing very big ships sort of implies you will need crew rather than NPCs but I suspect the caterpillar will be similar to the Constitution for that so maybe NPCs will suffice.
