I recently started watching this show & I'm several episodes in. So far I'm enjoying it, though some of the things have given me the feeling that they've taken liberties with changing the lore here & there based on the games, but I haven't played them in quite a while. So I could be wrong about that.

I have watched a few episodes, and liberties were definitely taken. The first few episodes of season 2 make me quite annoyed as Reach was under a massive seige by the time Sword base was infiltrated by Covenant forces, in the show they kind of make it seem like it isn't the Area 51 of the planet with how little attention and concern is displayed.

Some of the other bits defintiely make it hard as a Halo fan to watch and not constantly comment throughout, it is a great sci-fi show, but not a good Halo show. My biggest issue so far with it seems to be that they spent a lot of time outside of a main story and spread focus out on too many characters.

The thing I want to hold up as a crowning achievement is the Spartan battle suit. Paul Verhoeven wanted desperately to show this kind of thing in his depiction of Starship Troopers, and indeed I think the concept does show up first in Robert Heinlein. What we actually see here on the screen is as visually stunning as any piece of film anywhere. In s2e4, when Riz is trying again and again to make ingress through the forest crevasse and keeps falling, getting shot and falling again—each time getting up from what would kill anyone and continuing on—that is one amazing piece of visuals. Worth the time to watch just for that.

Plus Master Chief rocks.

Ahhh, Master Chef.

I've heared a bit about the Halo spin-off show but most of the noise I caught was about him taking off his helmet and the audience seeing his face, reminded me of the 1995 Judge Dredd movie with Stallone... I suppose you don't pay for Stallone and don't show his face but it wasn't enough to save the movie in the end just as I suppose it won't be enough to adversely affect this TV series if it's any good.

You're not. They have designated this the silver timeline of the halo universe.

I haven't watched the show, but I've read about some of the controversy. Apparently they had Chief commit war crimes in the first season by *spoilers removed* and the actor they picked for Master Chief believes you can't show emotion with a helmet on.

Which never mind shows like the mandalorian showing that's absolute garbage, just playing the games would show you how emotion can be conveyed with a helmet on.

So they somehow managed to pick an actor who hasn't played the games, and writers who haven't read the fall of reach or first strike, and don't know that the Spartans were effectively chemically castrated.

I just don't know how Microsoft can drop the ball this hard so many times on one of the greatest science fiction franchises ever created. They should have let Neill Blomkamp make and odst show. They could have printed money.

Em. . .so your complaint is the actor of Master Chief didn’t know who that was before he took the job?

You know that’s pretty common, right?

And yeah certainly one’s ability to act is hampered by a helmet. You note Mando but Pedro Pascal almost left the role when they explained he needs to keep the helmet on. He had the same complaint.

I can’t say these complaints have much value to them. I’m enjoying the series. I hope Master Chief gets to take the helmet off more.

1) I didn't know that about Pedro
2) Good! I'm not saying anyone shouldn't.
3) I was just trying to comment on the liberties /changes from the lore

The only thing I'm saying with my tone is that the lack of respect for the source material visible just in vignettes killed MY enthusiasm. I view that as a miss by Microsoft given I most likely qualify as a super fan.

And yes I know what that sounds like lol. I'm not trying to be that guy (while clearly being that guy in this case.) But Forward Unto Dawn and Halo: Legends show that Microsoft can get wins while being respectful of the source materials. I would love more of the same.

I have read that season 2 is much better than season 1. I was contemplating the Paramount free trial on the Xbox dashboard.

Edit: as a further aside, I can't see the video that started this thread in the US for whatever reason

I can’t see the vid either, which is weird because I watched it and some others. It’s season 2 episode 1. They may have posted it for a limited time only just to gather viewers.

My take away is that it’s good. I was lured in by an animated trailer of a squad jumping out of a transport into a battle, and was starry eyed for days. Just can’t get over how real it looks. That was not live action though. This above is the live action TV series.

S2E2 has a scene with a squad member trying to traverse a forest chasm while her team members try to shoot her. What you see is clearly impossible and yet. . .damn it just looks so good it feels real. It feels like you are seeing something utterly impossible happening right in front of you, as she leaps up the side of the 150’ chasm 30’ at a time.

The story and characters are good too. Whatever the complaints were, I have not seen sci-fi drama near this good since Space Above and Beyond, and I think this is better.

Okay fine, I'll give it a chance. But if my heart gets broken I'm going to blame you.

There have been two Judge Dredd movies, one where he takes the helmet off in the first five minutes, one where he keeps on.

I like them both but the '95 movie took liberties with the source material the second didn't - it's a testament to Carl Urbans prowess that he was able to swallow his pride and do the source material it's due justice :-)

This was even referenced in the 2021 Xmas special Dredd strip where the counter-reality movie versions of the character ended up in the comic:

If the second movie had got the budget to make the visuals and future-setting of the first one it would have been the definitive Dredd moving picture.

I realize those fans of the game are judging based upon many years enjoyment of their pastime and I can’t speak to that. What I can say is Paramount does seem to have pulled out all the stops and delivered fast action eye candy unlike anything I have ever seen.

These are tools and weapons as close to what Star Citizen is delivering as can be, with the exception that we don’t get power suits like these. This is close however, and I think we should all at least admit, this is just stunning. I don’t even know what to compare it to.

Hahaha, virtual drinks for virtual heartbreak, I like it.
Well, if ever CIG grows the balls to install virtual strip clubs into the Verse, we'll be enjoying those drinks there. Because very few things help heal broken hearts like incredible distractions, in RL or RP.

It's no secret that ever since I'd learned about the game having toilets & showers, I've said that the game will at some point have to have nudity as well, even if that's either locked away behind some sort of age filter or added by players as an add-on as we were promised way back when that we'd be able to create eventually.

I'm just a little let-down because of the fact that Halo had SO MUCH to go off of that WASNT the games. The Halo Book series is pretty damn good with lots of interesting side-stories. If only they started the show with the Spartans in training and then proceeded to show them performing their original mission for a bit: Destroying Human Terrorist Cells. Then we'd get at least SOME of John and the entirety of Blue team ripping through a camp of rebels in the jungle. That was definitely cool in the books. Too bad none of the writers ever played the game or read any of the books. Missed opportunity. Also, all Spartans should be pale as fuck. John 117 would have Michael Jackson's skin tone. Then again, the show's John always has his goddamn lid off...

Halo:The Fall of Reach or Halo: First Strike would have both been incredible to adapt.

I know they made a fall of reach cartoon but that really would have been the way to go if armor and showing emotion was the concern - show the program pre-armor.
