    Coronavirus COVID-19 Thread

It really isn't a system, though, unless you would consider Wal-Mart, Target, Amazon, etc. to be a "retail/shopping system." Hospitals are just a business, with a business model...what we have now is just something we've backed into through either direct action or inaction based on...

Well, it's Capitalism, baby! So, if the purpose is making money... On a more serious note, there are plenty of studies out there showing the US spends more per capita on health care, without any better outcomes than other countries spending less.

Anyone have any book series suggestions?

If you like a good satire & have a sick, cynical sense of humor, I have picked up "QualityLand" by Marc-Uwe Kling, and I'm having a blast...I seem to literally laugh out loud at least once a page...

    Coronavirus COVID-19 Thread

It's a "bug/feature" of a for-profit health care system....caring for seriously ill people is a money-losing endeavor, while providing elective surgeries are where the profits are... It would be interesting to see how the stock prices of the health care insurance companies are doing...

    16 ram vs 32?

Really? I've never gotten that message. I pretty much always close my browser before playing, and I've turned off all the M$ crap apps that run in the background, so my RAM usage is minimal right before I start SC (normally about 2.5 ~ 3GB RAM being used).

    Coronavirus COVID-19 Thread

Well, this is one of the concerns I've been having...treating COVID19 patients takes a toll on the healthcare workers, and the lack of PPE early in the crises (and maybe on-going) has also had an impact: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/10/nyregion/paramedics-cpr-coronavirus.html As usual, if you...

    16 ram vs 32?

What we really need is somebody to put in 128GB of RAM, so they can put the game on a RAM Disk, and report back to us...any takers?

    Coronavirus COVID-19 Thread

This is a classic example of trying to ram a policy down everybody's throats, without actually really looking at the data to guide a decision. Apparently, you are making a mistake if you look at the data...

looking for a Cutlass Blue CCU

I think they should be easy to come by when the Cutty Blue is released? They should make CCU's available then.

    16 ram vs 32?

The only other thing(s) I can think of before getting more RAM would be to quit out all browsers and other memory hogging apps before running SC....I normally quit my browser, have 3GB of RAM being used before I launch SC, and after playing SC never go above 11GB RAM usage (out of my 16GB). The...

    16 ram vs 32?

If SC is swapping, a) did you set your paging file to your NVMe (so it is using your fastest device), and b) are you using the Win10 defaults for paging, or did you set different values? I would highly recommend going with the Win10 defaults. In the old days, the OS defaults were sub-optimal and...

Hold on there...it is a public safety issue, with regards to a communicable disease. They may willing *consent* without understanding all the implications, that is, they may then go out and infect other people who would otherwise not get infected. There is precedent for what is going on...

Every patch man...if it isn't one thing, it's another! I'd insert the old Roseanne Roseannadanna picture, but nobody would get it...well, a couple of people would!

    16 ram vs 32?

It would be really interesting to have somebody with 32GB RAM *pull out* 16GB of their RAM and do a "Before and After" test. You can definitely run it with 16GB of RAM, and I'm sure 32GB would be better, but *how* much better would it be? Would the cost be worth it? Enquiring minds wish to...

In a weird way, this shows the system is working. If you have a question like this in a democracy like ours, you go to court to get an answer! Of course, for most of us, this is too cost-prohibitive. So, either be rich, or find people to fund your lawyers. Reading that article was like trying...

    Coronavirus COVID-19 Thread

This was a young, healthy 24 year old, so very scary! Absolutely...the true number of sick cases/exposed is probably way higher than the actual count. If we could get more testing and even an antibody test, and do a population sample, we would know a lot more about how to safely open the country.

Was just texting with a co-worker. Her 24 year old son is sick, probably with COVID..."Fever, fatigue, tightness of chest with periods of shortness of breath." He got better after 2 weeks, went surfing and then relapsed...get this, he tried to get tested, but got turned away --> "too young, no...
