This IAE Igot myself down to two Carrier birds, the Hawk and the Eclipse. Fortunately the Eclipse has two Quantum Fuel tanks so has reasonable range. If I didn't think I needed a Stealth Scout, I would probably CCU it.

More like a scout ship for a base or carrier. The only thing a Terrapin does better is it is a solo ship.

Absolutely. They each serve a support role in a larger task force. Neither serves well as a lone patrol ship or as the centerpiece of a small task force.

Now in a Squadron, a Polaris or two at the center, 2 to four of these and 4-6 Hammerheads, with the Hammerheads on the perimeter, would be a nasty customer.

It comes down to how many torps can you engage in that less than 3 second window. A Retaliator should make you sweat. Four Eclipses or a Polaris should make you sweat rather uncomfortably. A pair of coordinated Talis should induce panic.

The Ares has 4 size 5 missile hardpoints. AFAIK they are not bespoke, which means each Ares can carry and launch in one salvo 4x size 5 torps.

Unless there is something truly special about it, no. With what we already have it is a slot we don't need filled. The two slots that we are likely to need filled is a Fighter Carrier (more capacity than a Kraken) and an LHA, once they get around to that.
