Anyone else exited about EWAR?

No, a couple of different options is fine for a thing like exploration, but I don't see a reason to make a whole other ship for a function like EWAR. There won't be a ton of variation in roles, so as long as a ship has strong signal sending capabilities and a good computer, it will function well for this. There isn't really much room to change that and have different ships focused on different aspects of EWAR, there will simply be different computers/equipment.
I might just be different levels of power and sophistication, like the difference between jamming an Aurora and jamming a Bengal. A Herald would be over kill and leave the Aurora defenseless, but the Bengal is much larger, has much more power at its disposal, and will probably be hardened against electronic attack. I'd say there's just as much opportunity here as with exploration, and I'd love to see what other options we get.

Besides another Herald, what types of other ships do you think could be incorporated into this niche?

Just to clarify, I meant that I don't like the idea of another ship entirely dedicated to EWAR/info like the Herald. I'd love to see EWAR capability in ships like the prowler or some future scout ship.

Something corvette-sized, with a big enough power plant to power broadcasting units that can saturate an entire fight, while counteracting enemy EWAR, scrambling enemy missile locks, and rickrolling the enemy commander.

Edit: In that case, a Constellation has a big enough powerplant to put out some good disruption. Strip out one of the turrets, put on a broadcasting unit, some armored CPU cores in the cargo hold to power it. Retrofit a Corsair for a smaller package.

Double edit: The Bulldog might have a good small-scale scrambler too. Just seems like it would fit in well with the long-range, durable nature of it.

It's be nice, but one of the things I hoping is the enhanced modularity system means that we can do more extreme conversions of base ships. So doing things like rigging a Freelancer for EWAR will be more feasable. Hell, I'd love it if the Freelancer, which has that big open hold, just had a bunch of modules you could load into the back to switch to different roles.

Gladiator might be a top tier EWAR ship, if the thing about ECM pods and etc being Class 3 hardpoints still stands.

4 ECM/Jamming pods, 2 racks of Anti-Fighter missiles. Yummy!
An EWAR version of the Gladiator sounds like the ticket - like the Hornet Ghost version. And it does have that unique look that would fit well with EWAR. Good call!

The possibilities are very exciting.

I'll disable the shields and then fly my aurora into it.

Or I'll try and disrupt/disable enemy radar & anti torpedo defenses, after which I will fire everything at them in my retaliator.

I don't expect EWAR to have as big of a combat multiplier effect as it did in EVE. The power to completely erase the enemy's ability to shoot at you just doesn't sound right at all in the Star Citizen context.

You can't completely erase the enemies ability to shoot on EVE either; there are all sorts of factors and time limits and different systems effected.

I would prefer that more than one company manufactured a particular type of ship,
it seems more likely that that would be the case in the vehicle market of the future.

I've been sketching some ideas for a small mining/collecting ship with a full-view cockpit, much like the old M.A.S.H. choppers.

Right but having multiple EWAR ships in a single fleet in EVE created a stacking effect that made it pretty difficult to fight. I'm personally hoping that EWAR in Star Citizen will not produce a "cumulative" (aka stacking) effect, but rather be more focused on localized effects that can be moved around as needed. So if you needed EWAR, one vessel would be enough to cover most needs, but if you wanted to create a larger EWAR field of effect (while the EWAR effects themselves remain unchanged), you'd need multiple ships for that and position those ships in a way where your field of EWAR would be much larger than what a single ship could cover.

Good call. Stacking and creating perma-lock would be a nightmare but spreading multiple ships for larger field would definitely work!

I have to say the newsletter was pretty interesting and it's great to see CIG focusing on multi-crew stations! But I'm super stoked about EWAR. I use to use ecms all the time playing EVE until they nerfed them. So I am especially eager to get back into the 'Crap, why aren't my systems working' game. ;)

EWAR
: The electronic warfare station gives you the ability to hinder an opponent’s systems, bringing a new tactical edge to dogfighting. Use of the EWAR suite requires the installation of a specialised electronic warfare module which generates the effect in a radius. You can also fit an emitter to target specific enemies. Electronic warfare breaks down into the following areas:

  • Dampening: Reduce the range of opponent systems
  • Disruption: Hinder the operation of opponent systems
  • Disable: Disable an enemy system, forcing them to restart it
  • Debuff: Make the opponent more vulnerable

Stoked to run Deep Recon, Speed Scouting, and EW missions for The Fleet.

I don't see why there would be any sort of stacking in SC. Signal relaying between ships for a larger AOE, maybe. But as you said, there's no reason for EWAR to stack.

Freelancer rear turret hooked with broadcasting array and a powerful/dedicated computer system in the cargo hold could work

same could be done like a cutlass red, just remove the scanner turret package for a ewar thing.

I hope we get to keep the original Herald hull.... its so ugly and weird that I bought it

I think ewar will be an option for several different ships, in fact I would expect limited ewar capabilities to be available for any ship. I want it on a Hull C to aid in smuggling. But there should be some ships that have variants specifically designed for this purpose, perhaps the Herald would be one of these, maybe call it Phantom or Flea.

Well, most smuggling ships would probably have the capability to mask cargo or disrupt sensors, and most ships will apparently have the capability to jam transmissions. Obviously, the jamming strength and radius depends on the size of the ship, the size of the broadcast array, etc.

mgk
the more complex the game gets, the bigger the advantage SC, alpha, and beta players will have at launch
