Neuralink, one of Elon Musk's ventures had a press conference the other day. In it, they outlined their current stage of development and their vision for the future. Science fiction is becoming reality.

As a little background though, the driving force behind this isn't really to help the sick and disabled. Remember a few years ago when a bunch of tech giants were warning against AI and what it would do to our future? They were protesting pretty loudly. The fear, if you were out of the loop, is that we will invent AI to our detriment. They were afraid that AI would be the last human invention. It sounds like nutter business, but they had some really good points.

Elon Musk was one of those people afraid of our possible future. He decided to take another route though. Instead of continuing to attempt explaining the potential problem, he did what he does best. He acquired and funded a company. This one was making a brain-computer interface. His vision is that instead of being comparative cattle, we could stand on even ground with AI. Instead of AI and humans being separate entities, this would give us the chance to absorb AI into our evolutionary advancement.

So, Neuralink was born. His plan is to start with something simple, like moving a prosthetic. The finish line though is more like the "Matrix". The hope is to download and access information on a massive scale. The way he sees things right now, we have that ability but it is slowed by the interface. We walk around with infinite access to knowledge and date, but have a very slow transfer rate.

That's because our control system is analogue. It goes from our brain, to our hands, to our phone/pc, and back through our eyes/ears where our brain can absorb the information. His dream is to cut out the "middle man". This would essentially vastly increase the bandwidth between our brains and our devices, allowing data transfer to occur at a much more efficient pace.

Sadly, as amazing as this sounds, the reality is much more likely to be full dive porn and corporate advertisement scrolling across your vision.

TLDR: Full Dive VR in a couple decades? Elon Musk is unwittingly creating a better future for porn.

Thats cool, sounds a bit like the "Ghost" side of people in the film Ghost In The Machine Shell (the animated version, not the live action which didn't seem to touch on it).

And I bet Elon is sick of people saying that, too.

"Ghost in the machine"??? Maybe you mean "Ghost in the Shell"...

I read about this news a few days ago and it not really a news: thisngs like that are around for quite some thime now but always limited ot the research enviroments for using prostetics.
I remember of some project to allow blind people to see by interfacing a B/W camera with some cervical elettron (or where ocular nervs... i can't remember..) to "resotre" the sight to blind people.
Also there are already several case study of primates with implants thet allow them to control prostetics arm...

The real news is that an "Elon's compnany" is into the business, and considering how creazy is Elon this mean this teclology will be really available for people in a decade, this is the real news

Yes indeed I did I has been a couple of years since I last watched it and my DVD collection is on the other side of the room so I have a cast iron alibi!

I'll edit that now 🥴

Sci-Fi have always gone to reality sooner or later... just a mater of time...
Look at Star Trek and many other movies...
--- almost every one have or can have a pocket size communication device now and it have gone beyond that to now it's a pocket touch screen computer communication device...
Imagine what's next...!
Only thing stopping imagination to become reality is lack of knowledge (the know how), cash or needed material which revert back to knowledge and then again cash to realize it etc. etc....
Three things is all you need to make imagination a reality if one is missing it ain't happening.

CHEERS! 🍻

Could this be the beginning of something similar to Altered Carbon? Having a device that can store your memories and knowledge. Also, the ability to push information rather than having to spend a long time learning things. If this helps put a human on par with AI for speed of processing data it would more than likey be the next step in evolution.

I think this is a much further distance away than some of the more simple things. It's not simply a lack of knowledge on how the brain works though. It's more about the sheer complexity of how memories are stored (as we know it now). I'm far from an expert, but from the information available it just doesn't seem feasible to copy memories in the foreseeable future. As for uploading "yourself" like in Altered Carbon, I can't even imagine how far away we are. That's not even bringing in the theological arguments.

Now moving a prosthetic limb, that should be in the next decade. The ability to trick your brain into seeing and feeling something that's not there (aka full dive), maybe 20-30 years? The complexity of that task is just staggering to me. We experience things as a combination of specific neurons that fire as a result of various input. So I can't imagine even the complexity of a single image. We have around 100 billion neurons in our brains. Trying to artificially create a specific firing of those neurons would be an engineering... impossibility.

But hey, like I said, I'm far from an expert. What the hell do I know about it? All I know for sure is that it sounds cool as hell.

I think the biggest leaps will be made by getting intelligent systems (ML or DL) to do the figuring-out part of how memories / personalities are made and stored. Anything which gives the machine greater access to our wetware is going to help in that process.

I think the real challenge with that approach is you still die, then something else might get another go.

I think the solution would be closer to a meshing where there’s no difference between you and the machine.

that would be nice to. No one wants to die and i feel like 1 lifetime is not enough these days.

Wouldn't it be amazing to be uploaded to a virtual game? Then we could play SC for real!

Imagine how it would feel for real when you suddenly fall through the floor of a lift, or in through your ship in quantum! And there was no suicide-to-respawn "button" 😂😂

Btw, I do wonder if SC will be released before we in the real world invent "respawning" 😂
