Hey all, for those in the unaware, at 2 minutes after midnight 14/11/16 (NZDT) New Zealand was hit by a 7.5 earthquake, centered in the upper half of the south island. It's not the worst quake we have had in recent years, but it was big enough to be felt some 400 miles away. The shift in the magnetic field of the earth caused the whole sky to light up like the northern lights, it woke me up and had me under my bed some 180 miles from the epicentre.
There has already been 2 confirmed casualties and the damage to our infastructure is pretty bad, with main highways and roads out all over middle of the country, there have been widespread evacuations due to the tsunami risk (and we were hit by a 2m high tsunami).
Thankfully NZ has very stringent building standards, which are even more stronly enforced since the February 2012 Christchurch earthquake that killed 185. And as such our buildings have mostly remained intact
At the time of this post going out (20hours after the initial quake) there have been over 380 aftershocks of over 4.5 on the richter scale.
