The suggestions seem reasonable, although I'm not a fan of the "Quantanium is the only thing to mine in a Prospector" implication... It's the most profitable, but many like the experience of mining without the risks that Quantanium brings (having to get to a refinery quickly, having to stop for security scans on the way to a refinery, pirates (and gankers) on the way to a refinery or on way to sell the refined product) and prefer to mine other resources instead.

You can make a good income mining other resources too. In 3.18, quantinium is going to be more difficult to find in minable quantities, and you'll find that mixed mining takes far less time.

But there's really no reason to pick one planet over another. You're going to have to go to different places to get all your gear anyway, so just pick what turns your crank. It makes a lot of sense to pick a station as your residence. Don't forget to check out the L4 and L5 Lagrange points. Some of them are interesting. So do L2 stations, though at the moment they're not so hot for mining operations.

I mean space stations are such easy.

Planets are such hard many waits

Well, as long as it's not a gas giant with extremely thick atmosphere and high lag.
Fortunately for us, they reduced the altitude you have to obtain to a way more reasonable altitude. It doesn't take much longer than to leave any of the other planet ary landing zones.

edit: but still, don't drop a match. Nothing is prettier than a Oxygen Hydrogen mix turning a one time gas giant into a water world - but it'll be the last thing all those NPC's ever see. Maybe some players too

Oh, that's great news, assuming that change survives all the way to PU one day.

one day we will have a home base, or a moon!
Once we get another UEE system or 2 into the game [1], it would be nice to see the Pioneer (and smaller "relatives") be brought online, so that people could start claiming land and building their own settlements\homes, which would add more POI for people to visit and possibly trade at, making the planets and moons feel less "empty"... Even without the UEE land claims they would be nice, but it would require more work to build in a "lore friendly" offline "defence" for the non-UEE settlements than it would for UEE ones (where the UEE navy can be spawned in as\when required) - They'll still have to likely build some non-UEE defence in the future, too, though.

[1] There is a real need for a "high security" UEE system in the next 3-4 systems added, to allow the PVE (and new) players to be separated from the more PVP oriented portion of the playerbase, and thereby reduce the friction between the 2 groups of players, both in-game as well as on Spectrum, etc. A few adjustments to the "call to arms" rewards (either have rewards or the frequency (and tier) of CS targets varied "per system") and an "unlawful" equivalent (hunt down bounty hunters\"UEE" targets\members of rival gangs), and all other activities could keep equivalent payouts regardless of the system's "security" level.

I am gonna risk it and go Orison because all my ship upgrades are available at Cousin Crows. When 3.18.1 drops I can restart at Lorville.

I've been looking for that place since it was announced and nope can't find hide no hair of it. It's under one of the platforms you go down some steps I was told, I bet that's not correct?

Is there any value in starting at, say, Orison, grabbing the gear you want, then doing a character reset and choosing another starting zone? Could even do that more than once. I wonder if it's slower or quicker to multi-restart like that than it is to just fly around Stanton for your initial shopping trip?

I guess a reason not to is if you need to play for a bit to build up some credits before you go shopping for parts/gear.

In 3.18, Orison isn't such a pain. You can QT after your ship climbs about as far as it needs to on other planets.
