I am slowly going through my learning curve. Doing delivery missions etc. Saw a video on Flight Sticks. Got intrigued. I like the immersive part of it. My question is whether I should invest in a Flight stick setup now or continue to learn and grow using mouse/kb. I intend to do delivery/mining/trade missions. However, as I get better at handling the ship move to combat missions. eventually pvp.

Long time back I played with flight sticks (wing commander, xwing, etc.) However, I have not played any space sim for a very long time.

I currently use a single Thrustmaster T16000M flight stick along with keyboard & mouse. When possible, I'll be picking up a 2nd since they can be switched to suit each hand. Different people like different setups, so this is my thought.

I used dual T16000s for years and they lasted me well. I recommend that setup as an entry level solution. Mouse and KB is fine and all but nothing beats dual sticks for immersion.

Made the switch last year to dual Virpil Constellation Alphas and a VKB Rudder setup. It's expensive but well....I don't have a ton of hobbies lol.

I've been looking for a good HOTAS for a while now, but there's really not too great of a variety. Most are geared towards flight sims (well, duh) but I'd want one with button setups more appropriate to Star Citizen.
That is, until one day I saw a spectrum post from this one guy who had done his own custom one.
It was magnificent. Dude even made a triangle for shield hotkeys.
So I'm now planning a project like that as well, not too actively as I don't have the time right now, but I'll certainly get around to it before the game is released.

I'm still planning on buying a regular stick though, but the throttle side of things will be custom.
Hmm, guess I didn't really reply to the topic. Ah well, beer.

I love flying with dual T16000 and couldn't switch back
Same with Lando.

@Starooqi T16000 are cheap effective sticks if your not a "hardcore" sim pilot and want to gradually test fighting with joysticks. Not worth spending many hundreds with Virpil or VKB if in the end it is not your thing.

I'm using them for hardflying and pvping (the only thing I do in StarCitizen), they work good enough for my needs.

Start with one stick if you are familiar with mouse and keywoard, then maybe 2 if you really want the immersion (but less precision as mouse beats sticks for that for shooting).

I ran a Logitech 3D stick for a while. It was a little sloppy but worked OK.

A few years ago I got a Logitech X56 HOTAS for Chtistmss. I've never looked back. The thing about the X56 is it has thumbsticks for strafing.

You don't have to hit cruise control or hold the stick forward to fly.

Last Christmas I got my better half a Logitech X52 Pro. It doesn't give you analogue control for strafing. She loves it.

I am a right-handed person. If I get the flight stick will it be on a left flight stick and I will be using the mouse with the right. correct?

T16000m can be for left or right handed use. It comes with the modification in the box.

What I do is install the mod for the left hand, so that my right hand is free to use mouse and keyboard. It didn't take long at all to get used to.

Dual sticks if you can get them. Personally I have NOT used them (yet), but I was a production excavator operator in the mining industry for a few years. When I was learning I had to concentrate on which stick to use and move to do things with the machine's bucket..after a short period of time it was all muscle memory and conscious thinking went out the window, then the speed picked up and the supervisor would send more trucks my way. Eventually they had no more trucks to send me...then eventually I became the supervisor when the supervisor left lol.

Looking at the control setups and videos, I can see it translates perfectly and so again if you can buy some cheapo dual sticks...you cannot go wrong.

Yes. As @Vavrik said the T16 comes with a right/left configuration.
You just need to change the thumb grip and reverse the hand grip, quick and easy.
Also there is a switch at the base of the stick to tell which stick is left/right if you use 2 for exemple.

If you are a keyboard+mouse player, you should consider Hand On Stick and Mouse (HOSAM) configuration I've been using for a while @Starooqi

As @vahadar says, mouse would be always more precise than stick -- that's why I use it for yaw, pitch and fire, while the left-handed stick allows me to precisely control thrust, roll, strafe left & right, etc.

Another vote for what everyone above said. Dual sticks are great. All T16000Ms can be set up for left or right hand use. They have a twist axis which is very useful. Some joysticks don’t.

If you later want to upgrade to a really high end pair of sticks like Virpil Alpha grips (one each left and right handed) on Virpil WarBRD bases which cost a LOT and usually have a few weeks lead time to order, you won’t have ‘wasted’ too much money on the more entry-level T16000Ms, and you might even be able to sell them.

If you have any trouble finding the T16000M sticks, it might be useful to know Thrustmaster also do these, which are almost exactly the same as T16000Ms, except they are blue and the button which is below (closer to you than) the hat on a T16000M is replaced by a button above the finger trigger on the TCA side stick. They are also sold with both buttons for both sides included, and a switch underneath, to allow them to be set up for either left of right hand.

[Edit] Oh, and don’t spend more on buying a T16000M Flight Sim Duo pair than you can buy two separate single T16000Ms for. the Duo is literally just two of the exact same stick in one box. That’s it. Get whichever is cheaper, usually two singles. It takes a screwdriver and 2 minutes to switch the buttons over, and that is NOT worth an extra cent!

TLDR: You absolutely want as much/many axes as you can afford. KB/M does NOT cut it for proper flying. Handheld controllers for consoles, KB/M for FPS, and sticks for flying. This is the way.

OK, long/full answer here from someone who has spent a LOT of time flying with a LOT of different configurations, but without going down the full Simpit rabbit hole:

1.) Low budget - A plain ol' Logitech Xtreme 3D is still just great. You won't get a whole lot of buttons, you'll still need to hit up the KB frequently, but even this $30 investment beats the pants off trying to point a ship with your mouse! Won't last forever, Amazon says I've purchased 4 of them apparently, and my first certainly was bought before the Zon branched out from just books. Still my go-to stick for Star Wars stuff like XWA or Squadrons where fewer buttons are needed:

2.) Low-Midrange - The Logitech X52 served me very well for a long time in Elite/SC, and my brother still uses his. Great point to dive into two-handed flying. Other contenders here are the cheaper TM T-Flight, though I find this one a bit TOO simplistic if you're bothering to go HOTAS. On the other end I think the X-56 is a bit too big of a price jump over the X52, and the T-16000M throttle was just plain to HUGE for my not-very-huge hands.

3.) High-Midrange - The most recent addition to my collection is the new Omnithrottle from VKB. I shied away from HOSAS until this baby came along, so that now I can FINALLY have translational axes on the LH that make SENSE! Twist-axis-for-Z-translation was just too weird for me to be willing to take the plunge, but the Omni fixes that problem, and so far I'm loving it! You're approaching the $400 mark now for a set of Gladiator stick + Omni, but they're good pieces and arguably worth the price:

4.) Top-of-the-line - For YEARS I lusted, and finally about two years ago I took the Virpil plunge. We're talking $800 territory now, but hey, that's still only half the cost of that new RTX 3080, right? The Virpil stuff is just knock-your-socks-off amazing and beautiful though. Everything is machined and anodized aluminum which won't only last forever but the attention to detail makes them as much pieces of art as they are controls. For airplane flight simulators the controls on the throttle will basically cover everything you need to fly a jetliner. For space simming, the Constellation stick has some really nice features like the flip down trigger and analog ministick which come in handy for all sorts of things. Not the sort of hardware you just buy without a plan and a certainty that you're going to use it a lot, but creates a nice feedback loop that just looking at it hanging off my desk makes me want to fire up a game right now just to use the thing!
