Griefing Pirating how will they balance this?

It is interesting seeing the threads on reddit about piracy griefing. I do wonder how cig will balance both sets of interest groups. I can see why it is going on and because "pirates" are always choosing their targets they only seem to pick weaker targets so it is the same as bullying (Don't get me wrong its logic and smart but the victims don't like it). Now why do people get so upset when a player does it but not when an NPC does ?

Trading should not be hassle free especially to the drug lab but there also has to be a way to tag the "pirate" so he gets a record and at some point maybe gets "caught".

I think the difference between pirating and bullying is that pirating has nothing to do with being weak it has everything to do with economics and money, they aren't attacking you because you are weak they are attacking you because its financially beneficial and they assess targets and choose one they feel they can complete the job or mission with, yes they do attack targets weaker but the reasoning behind it is not to grief or bully but to make money, bullying in itself is a form of humiliation and personal degradation and while I know some people in this game will try and bully and grief players and I hope RSI can effectively keep this to a minimum I also feel people/players who truly understand a pirates role and the reasoning behind this profession will treat it as such, besides one of the best well known pirates in space is Han Solo himself, thief, smuggler and at times killer everyone loved Han and never considered him a bully. :P

Anyways that's my 2 cents on it!

First of all I see it like Crymsan: Pirating and Griefing have not necessarily to do with each other. Anyway, there will be a risk level system later. In RL1, the central UEE system, you'll be able to cruise through space even as a SP, and your chance to survive is pretty high. But: there isn't much money to earn here either. The higher the risk level, the more you should take care of your own skin or at best fly in a convoy. So in case of doubt you have to share the profit, but it is also higher than in the low risk level systems. Risk level 5 is then the most insecure area in which the pirates can feel at home. But here you should be a flying ace or belong to the pack.
Fly safe!

Right now there are players that are legitimately griefing but claiming they're only practicing for piracy, but since reputation isn't scheduled to be in until 3.5 and cargo doesn't persist when a ship is blown up (at least not the last time I checked), there cannot be any real piracy right now as there isn't any way to profit...other than taking pleasure in harassing others.

I'm a pirate but I haven't found anyone to extort or attack yet. I'm constantly looking for people but I rarely find them.

I found like 3 guys in Cyclones once, but they weren't doing anything to make money, so I left them alone. It's not like trying to extort 1,000 aUEC from some Prospector who you know is going to make between 17k and 30k on their run.

So far I've been a pretty piss poor pirate, ha. I don't even steal ships for joy rides since I have all the ones I like.

Once cargo stealing gets put back in, I'll go back to my piracy ways. Until then I'm just an evil explorer doing evil exploration things. Maybe I'll find some people with no concept of owning land and colonize the hell out of their space rock and call it America II.

I just have no luck finding things to pirate.

Ah so you gimped your pirating fun by backing CIG to the hilt! Can you not pretend you like the freelancer!

I do believe the first implementation of a Law system will take place with CIG's Reputation gameplay mechanic coming in 3.5 on the roadmap.
And whatever is being implemented will evolve over time.

If you can remember the old days of 2.6 & prior, you could steal ships (piracy!) and people could ram you on the pad (griefing) at Port Olisar quite easily. They implemented both "game-rule/procedural" type things (like, locking your ship doors, not allowing ships to take damage on the pad from ramming, etc.) and also "game-rules/lore-like law enforcement" things (security at Hurston, turrets on the stations that fire at criminals, bounty system on the worst offenders). In the future, with the upcoming rep system we will have more info, and your actions will stick with you for longer (?).

As the game evolves expect more intervention for the UEE Navy and govt. at the more highly lawful places. Also, players should be able to put out bounties on other players. I'm also expecting follow-on effects of criminal behavior, such as players who are criminals may not be able to access the latest and greatest technology (weapons, shields, etc.) without jumping through more hoops (are Behring or Klaus & Werner going to have stores on planets where they get robbed all the time? etc.)

Well, I think that pirates will be outnumbered. By A LOT! That in itself is a semi "in game balancing" obviously without being one created by devs. Now, people know that the possibility of being jumped is there. I was attacked by 3 Arrows when flying to orbit leaving Crusader ... I was able to speed outta it thanks to the Cutlass being faster flying straight, then jumped off to the closest system. Once the game achieves a stability that enables more organized "operations" such as security/ship escorting, and that being a solid alternative in game pirates will have a very hard time.

I am sure people will still get jumped and obliterated from time to time but now players are taking advantage of lack of interest in that aspect in game. Mining and deliveries seem to be the go to activities. I will do some mining because the UEC credits are super bugged. I bought 20k that I cant access. Sooooo I need in game profit from somewhere. But once that is taken care of I will shift my focus to military/security. And there are a ton of players/Orgs waiting for that also.

Sorry for the long post!

Thx!

Nothing in game currently is piracy, because there is no gain for it besides the "lols". Piracy by it's nature is intended for profit, often super illegal, horrendous acts are performed all for that delicious loot, which in turn funds more piracy and off duty entertainment. It is after all, a short yet jolly life. Until there is actual gain, people are just murdering. So, we continue to explore mechanics and wait until there is some kind of repercussion system in place.

Well since you have only bought ships you like I expect you haven't bought the freelancer since its ugly. So you can pretend to like the freelancer and steel it, then crash it etc whatever pirates do with ships they cannot keep.
But... But... I love my Freelancer. I had 3 of them until this last sale. Now I'm down to the DUR and MIS. I'll get the fatlancer back next year. 😭

Actually you can extort people to drop beacons for you to earn credits. There is profits, it's just difficult to force people to do that. I'm waiting on delicious cargo again 😇

The way I imagine piracy in SC, it doesn't even involve destroying ships. Why would I blow up my target's ship with all the goodies inside?
That's a BAD pirate. And a poor one.

If I'm in the equation, it'll involve at least one ship being blowed up... my own. I'll totally self-destruct! I'm a scarred mad-man! I gave up enough lunch money when I was a kid, I won't be handing it over as an adult. Not even in a game. I wonder if my refusal to play along will be considered griefing? I predict I'll be a "Death of a Spaceman" mechanics expert in short order. 😉
