Living in the Pacific Northwest seeing smoke in the mountains causes a lot of panic in the summer time.
I guess that's exactly how we roll at work.
People stick their heads in other peoples office and shout some nonsense.
Half an hour later they wonder why you show up to do what they told you to.
Might as well relax an post in forums instead.... (cough)
As long as you don't INSIST for people to care about the stuff you post (once you remember again that you did) it's a pretty chill life that way.
The forums are a great spot to come and talk with like minded folks in a manner that, as mentioned in other posts, isn't slammed by a ton of messages at once. You get direct engagement on your topic/question/interest, and it's with like minded folks who are basically wanting to discuss the exact same question. It's a pick and choose for your interests :D. I lurk a few times a year, but the draw of the forum is I actually come back, a few times a year, always.

Great points, a forum is also an incredible archive of knowledge and experience - it's no coincidence as Google lost control of the effectiveness of their search engine that Reddit became a critical source for information both asked now on the present and logged and easily searched up from the past.
Think of the oratory culture of ancient greece before and after it was introduced to the permanent record that is writing (Socrates had particular thongs to say about it, as recorded for history by Plato in writing)... Yes, both are valid ways for society to function, and both work. Forums and chat-boards and VOIP are just different ways of running a culture
