I have it for work too...... sometimes I check it.... ah another few hundred alerts... who was playing with the server again?
I like it because it is easy to work with... much like this website but more of chat and topic mechanism. I use it everyday to talk with my co-workers... where I really see its benefit is with the groups - ex. rock raiders - for stuff that does not require vocal communications. It's free - unless you decide to stand up your own server for security purposes (cloud storage requirements that prolly do not apply to us)... but I think it would be nice for a test drive.

Use case - We have a general channel that everyone bs's on, We have a topic channel like lua, and if we want we can pull people in for off topic discussions - like and IM. This tool would be use for planning and strategy, no real time gaming stuff.

At least check it out. I was skeptical too when my group started it... but it is awesome, and I wouldn't have to take my fat butt from one monitor to another.

So - a bit of info about slack. I was an early user of a slack that got in over 10k people. It just does not scale well for large amounts of people. Soon after reaching the 10k people we migrated to discord and archived the Slack.

For small teams it is great! For large groups it is terrible.

I could not speak for a huge deployment. Think we only have 30 people on it even though I work for one of the nations largest companies. Each group has their own slack that they maintain - since we all love skype (joke). It has grown organically within my company, not forced. Funny how people gravitate toward useful stuff.

We don't use slack for discussions, we actually use slack for alerts, when a connection goes below threshold, an alert is generated. Only a pity that the thresholds still have to be fine tuned and that some customers use bad connections but really don't care.

[EDIT] and in most cases I can't do shit about it

You can also use Discord to setup your own server, at no cost. Once in the past I did that and it worked great.
