Idiotic question inbound

I see people posting and being able to mention someone like for example @Thugari but its a link to their profile and the board even notifies them that they have been mentioned. So can anyone please explain to me how this simple yet amazing feat is possible or even how to do it myself? or am I stuck sending messages on this board the old fashioned way via a note in a bottle?

Just type @*person* and it should come up with a dropdown list of names - select one and it'll tag them into the post :)
