……...then why's it a 2 year old version of a 4 year old design?

What I mean is, they've redesigned or built from scratch every other ship in SQ42 except the Retaliator?

Just wondering. :/

The Retaliator definitely needs a re-work. I keep telling myself that they are purposely make it look bad, so it doesn't get over-bought in the 'verse.

Right now, the 185 m/s SCM speed and the 815 m/s AFB speed is killing me...

They do need to do a little rework of the interior, but I am not sure it really needs that much. It honestly is still a very successful layout and easy to navigate. The Turret coverage arcs are not terrible the pilots view is decent. The torpedo rooms seem huge and inside seem to be a bit of wasted space but the hallways around them feel perfectly claustrophobic, in fact the whole ship has that feeling and its perfect.

I agree, it doesn't need a total rework. They just need to think about a couple things from 2015 that were ok back then, but now with more larger ships need to be re-thought, like, a) can we put a couple more torpedoes in it, and b) can we reduce the crew needed, and keep it armored & protected).

The thing that kills the Retaliator is that you supposedly need 7 people to fully crew it. In 2015 that was ok, but oday, if I had 7 people in my party, I'd put one in the pilot seat of the Retaliator, and the other 6 in a Hammerhead. Fuck yeah!

I think most people would just be happy with being able to carry a couple more torpedoes, and have fewer but more powerful turrets, maybe even a couple of remote turrets that could be AI controlled. The latest iteration of the Retaliator in the 3.3 PTU actually has 3 Turrets with Size 3 guns, so that is a start. Now, if only the turrets a) worked and b) you could hit anything.

I just hope they don't make it any bigger. It should be a smaller multi-crew ship that can sneak around and unleash hell. Not as well as the Eclipse can, but it should still be able to sneak around a little. The overall shape and design of the exterior shouldn't change because it looks great.

I am in favor of it getting two more torpedoes as it should be between the eclipse and the Polaris in ability. Were the eclipse is about stealth the retaliator being comparable in size to the Constellation is able to keep a couple fighters at bay while it deploys two torpedoes at a large ship. I personally don't mind the crew requirements as we know turrets for the most part are going to be stationed by NPC's. Its also one of the ships that hopefully will be a strong counter to the Hammerhead.

Agreed on the torp count buff. And the positioning in the hierarchy.

It could be a real counter to the Hammerhead, especially with the crazy range on the big torps. I think that is is going to need to maintain some limited stealth to really take advantage of all of that though. Nothing like the Eclipse, more like a Cutlass Black or something along those lines. I do know that you can decouple and accelerate, then cut the engines and coast to really reduce you IR output and I think it cuts some EM too. I need to play around with turning off certain systems to lower output and still be able to bring everything back online with one button.

I am hesitant to recommend giving it any more stealth then can be achieved with other ships of its size through system adjustments like engine output, thrust and radar usage. I think its one of those ships while it can reduce its signature its going to be more in the thick of things and if not countered by the enemies fighters will deal serious harm to their capital ships. Much like the Gladiator and Polaris. This leaves the Eclipse in a unique position of being a first strike and perhaps flank attacks once the battle starts but the main bombers during the battle should be the Retaliator, Gladiator and Polaris. Each having their strengths and weaknesses and all best not left alone on either side.

I personally have no real experience with the Tali (talitalitali) but always viewed it in a similar light to the B17 and B29 bombers of WWII. Being able to fend for itself somewhat but would want to be deployed with escorts to ensure the payload makes it to the target and the bomber makes it home. If anything aside from speed mayhaps a bit of a stealth buff would help it a lot, a video a lot of us viewed recently had one targeted roughly 40Km away.

Way to early to really know what is going on (and I have no idea what the dev's really think), but here's my theory-crafting:

In large fleet engagements with capital ships, big ships will have radar scanners that can pinpoint other capital ships from 100-200km away. The cap ships move slowly, so they would send a wave of fighters in to probe defenses, and then send in Retaliators to target either the large capital ships, and/or take out the protective escorts (like the HH or Polaris's). This would go on until the capital ships could engage each other.

I don't see the Eclipse being much of a force in large capital ship battles, unless you had a whole wing of them (the current torpedo launcher only lets you launch one at a time). But I do see it being a stealth striker against prime targets &/or ground installations.

While I like the Tally, if it was up to me, I'd shift things a bit. For starters, I'd ditch the top & bottom front turrets & replace them with 4 fixed CF-337 Panther Laser repeaters or a pair of CF-447 Rhino Laser repeaters. I'd move the upper side turrets forward to the peak of the ship's head & make them remote turrets with dual CF-337 Panther Laser repeaters instead of manned for additional ship security. In the spirit of the WWII classic bombers, I would add a remote tail turret same as the side turrets. This brings the crew to 4 with the tail gunner serving double duty as the ship engineer. If all of the crew living areas are near the cockpit, that leaves that much more space to add another battery of torps where there would then be empty space between the current ship torp batteries.
