Can you get your camera out, walk up to random devs and ask them if this is a scam or if they are actually doing something that resembles work?

"So exactly what is Star Citizen?"
"Will there be DLC for this game?"
"Just who are TEST and what influence do they have over you?"
"How many Aurora's will it take to blot out the sun's?"
"Is Derek Smart really in charge of CIG?"
"Who is Chris Roberts?"
"How many Javelins does Montoya have?"

what can I get away with asking?

4.) I advise against asking time related questions since the answer will most likely be "Soon (tm)".

I recommend asking whatever you want that pertains to what you are looking forward to possibly enjoying in game eventually.

What do you want me to ask?

5.) I don't believe that anybody here would object to you asking if 1 of the eventual cockpit modifications might be a cup holder. Most TEST pilots don't want to be prevented from enjoying their favorite beverages while piloting.

It could definitely bring the terms, "quit hitting yourself" or "I'm beating my own ass" (liar, liar) whole new levels of amusement.

Also, that would make for 1 hell of an Easter Egg for you to hunt for to achieve hidden in the verse for you to possibly discover.

1. I'm pretty sure that there will be more space kitties than you will ever be able to pet them all.
2. I'm not sure that you will be able to afford more space kitties at the same time than you'll be able to fully fill an Idris with.
3. That's going to cost you a Yela sized moon made up of cat food with its asteroid belt in kitty litter. That would definitely make its Grim Hex the shittiest place in the verse if that happened.

Can you ask if they plan to incorporate the TWRL (TEST Weapons Research Lab) TP-20,000 Toilet Paper Gun into the FPS part of the game?

We need a cool joke weapon and I can't think of a better one than the Toilet Paper Gun, it makes it even more plausible now most ships have toilets and thus a plentiful ammo supply of toilet paper:
