Well that's probably the first ship with Maelstroem destructability.
Seeing that it's Test Squardons pet ride they probably figured "Who if not those guys" to test how pretty it goes boom with them new changes..

It's their damage simulation system which is going to be the new armour system.

The example they gave is that right now the system is so simplistic your fists do a tiny amount of damage but if you punch something hundreds of times that actually adds up and so you can punch through a steel door eventually.

Malestrom will calculate the actual damage done by your fists versus how strong a steel door actually is and will not allow the punches to damage the steel door like in real life.

So this will apply to ship Armour etc too - so a small fighter with S1 gun should not be able to do damage an idris's hull at all a bit like throwin a potatoe at a tank.

But if you distill the potato you can get slightly different results.

Do you remember during the StarEngine flythru, where the Gladiators were chewing up the structures by the lake? That's Maelstrom. It's a dynamic damage system that will break up objects and ships in the world, into something you would more reasonably expect to see. It replaces the existing hitpoint system and allows all kinds of more realistic behaviour, including the example @BUTUZ provided. Specific armor on this specific panel can become a reality, Cap ships can become immune to size 3 and lower weapons, and salvaging might change in several ways.

Perhaps most importantly, it gets the game to that point where a skillful (or lucky!) shot can disable a ship by hitting components. Since penetration and damage will be calculated in real time based on projectile mass and velocity versus what it's passing through, heavy ballistics will have a reason to exist. Ships like the Meteor will have a distinct purpose, and the ability to mount a size 4 and up will likely become an important consideration. We may even get other types of ammo.

It adds stakes to the Engineer Role, and hopefully will reward the skilled and prepared.

Thanks for the details you two, I've not been following the project closely enough recently it appears - sounds like I'll finally have a use for my Distortions, are the NN-14 Neutron energy weapons still supposed to be able to bypass shields too or is that a thing from 2016 or whenever it was?
