Ahoy fellow Gamers™,
Spaceship Captain Kowalski here. Noob to the verse, solo player until now, happy to be here. Standby for questionnaire:
Where you from stranger?
RP - Grew up in the rough area of Area 18 (Area 17.5). Dropped out of school at age 7 to become a tradie, got paid under-the-table to turn wrenches at Dumper's Depot. The money coming in funded my SLAM diet and I only lost one-and-a-half thumbs in my years of service. Skipped pilot's school - too smart for instructions. Saved for a Cutty after being exiled from my community for crimes against humanity. Been on the move ever since, and things couldn't be better.
OOC - I'm located in the Chicagoland area (not FROM Chicago..... can't see the skyline = ya live in the suburbs!). That means evenings CST time are when I typically get on to mess around in the verse.
What drew you to Star Citizen?
On multiple occasions since 2012~ I tried getting into EVE Online. I was decent at it, enjoyed trading and solo/small-gang PVP, but the style of EVE just never really did it for me...if I had the time I would have greatly enjoyed playing it like a tycoon but on the scale I was capable of it really came down to space-runescape. Got burned out by the gameplay every time.
Star Citizen was different...I was in love with the idea from the original announcement, but was skeptical of the community salt and development timeline, especially in the early days. I also wasn't working full-time back then, so even a starter game package promising "maybe a game someday" dissuaded me...until early this year I finally gave it a shot.
Long story short, I pledged more than I'm proud to admit at this point and have been absolutely captivated, even in the alpha state. The locations are beautiful, it bears many similarities to a flight sim (already have a HOTAS setup for XPlane and MSFS), and the variety of ways to have fun have kept me interested.
Despite some of the shortcomings of an in-development game (I'm typically very much against the early-release business model), this game has enough promise and meantime fun to keep me invested - I want to be a part of the game as it involves and build my skills as the content and popularity continues to develop.
What do you look forward to most in Star Citizen? (PVP, Exploration, etc)
Definitely crew/fleet gameplay (PvE and PVP) are the things I'm most excited for. I recently got more involved after hearing about turret buffs encouraging team play again, and I'm looking forward to the day when server meshing becomes a thing; cities and social spots becoming better-populated, more random encounters with players, and large-scale battles increasing in frequency.
Also big on the industry/trade aspects though I'm not holding my breath for those right now - the introduction of additional systems shows promise but it will be some time before it possibly become as fleshed-out as other MMO's. That said, I would really appreciate it if CIG introduced heavy-cargo delivery contracts in the meantime....right now all my ships with decent cargo holds feel under-used.
What was the first game you remember playing?
Doom II on my father's computer, back when Windows still had legitimate DOS built-in (95/98 and earlier IIRC). I remember it vividly because I got in trouble for talking about it in elementary school (teacher was very concerned with me raving about cutting the dudes up with the chainsaw - true story).
What other games do you play?
Always been a big MMO guy... EQ, WoW, GW, etc., though OSRS is the only one that I'm still semi-actively playing.
Apart from that I've always like large-scale sim/sandbox games. Simulators, FiveM, ArmA, even No Mans' Sky before finally giving SC a go. In general I've always preferred open-ended gameplay allowing me to make my own fun.
How did you first hear about Test Squadron and what convinced you to join?
First saw test at the top of the org page and thought to myself "oh, one of those." From experience I've been wary of mega-orgs and similar groups since it usually turned out to be a numbers/perks game with a disconnected community...until I saw the channel...then visited the forums. That showed me how dedicated some Testies are and decided this one's different. Seems like an awesome group and I'm looking forward to getting to know you all.
Picard or Kirk?
Kirk for nostalgia, Picard for meme potential.
