The first PC I built completely from scratch had the 1 Ghz thunderbird, immediately overclocked of course. The guy that I gave it to when I was done with it used it for 10 years before it quit because he didn't clean the dust out of the damn thing.

I used to have a Maximum PC mag sub back in the day. The PC mag that I really miss though was
PC Accelerator
Hilarious writing, great info and the hot babes didn't hurt ;)

I was working at a Fry's electronics when those K7 processors came out. Got an early bird grab of it. Though I was super cool there for a while.

I stepped into a Fry's on the east coast and was greatly disappointed.

As a 9 year old boy I did the same when I was on a very boring walk around a shopping village full of very dull shops with my parents.

I spotted a shop sign called 'Warner's' and for the first time that day was actually interested thinking it was a Warner Brothers shop like Disney had their own branded shops.

I shouted "Alright!" excitedly and ran in the door...

...Warner Brothers don't have their own brand of shop. Warners was a lingerie shop.

So you went in excitedly?

Hmm good time back then...
Let me think about how ridiculus are even the more basic pc today: that was top of the line, now we have people in offices that only use word processors and mail client and complain becouse a i5 with 4 GB RAM is "slow" and they "can't work like that"...
Some time some people need to remember what PC ware a few years ago... or deal with some LART dosage....

Why is nobody talking about the best thing on that cover, the Quad Booting? I mean, it's easy now but you are really just going to be running Windows, MacOS, and a bunch of Linux Distros that are all really about that same. Back then you could run Windows, Mac, DOS, OS/2, RISC OS, Unix, etc... and you would be that person that lived in a stack of programming manuals.

Damn! Some of you guys must be older even than me! I figured I was about the oldest, but maybe not? I graduated high school in 1979 and I think by 1982 my Dad had some IBM clone with dual 5 1/4 drives. Soon thereafter the first version of Windows got us all worked up, we had to swap disks like crazy. Those were the days. It's all been a blur since then. Not even 40 years and look where we are now...

I remember in the year 2000 talking to a buddy of mine who was in to building home computers. He showed me his latest and i was like "Cool" and he said about Moores Law and the limitation of Silicon and that something new will have to be found at some point.

"Why don't you just put two processors in then?" said I knowing nothing.
"Uh... well you'd have to rewrite how software works." he said.
"Well once you've hit the limit how else are you going to get faster? Many hands make light work if one chip can do it in 1 minute two chips should be able to do it in 30 seconds." I countered, still knowing nothing.

He pondered it for a few seconds then put a Dr Dray song on which was ridiculously lewd.

Now we have 4, 6, 8, 12, 16 cores but as far as I can tell software still isn't really being written to take advantage of all that spare processing power.

Lost contact with that friend years ago, I wonder what he's doing now?
You were right on the money mate! Why not just have 2 cpus!! I built a Dual P3 700 @ 1050 system in late 2000 / early 2001. it was pretty much the fastest PC in the UK if I recall.

I learned DOS and Pascal on a 4.7 megahertz IBM 8088 PC with a green-on-black teletype screen

my first build was a 16Mhz 80286 with an orange-on-black teletype screen

I put a 320x480 Hercules graphics card and a Logitech serial joystick in it to play Wing Commander

27 years on and I'm still waiting for the next Wing Commander update

I was just remembering coming back from Comdex with a new SoundBlaster card excited to add it to my system only to find out that I only had two PCI slots and both were filled by Voodoo 2 cards. So there I was realizing the horrible fate of do I continue to run Unreal Tournament in 800x600 with 2d sound or pull one Voodoo to get 3d sound.

And this was my first introduction to the world of computers.

Remember the first time you ran glquake.exe? :o

Yes had voodoo 2 in SLI here back in the day too! Two is always better than 1! Or it was in those days anyway! :D
