Hey there, a while ago, I watched some videos about the PS3 and a guy from the USA said he wanted a 1. Gen PS3 because of it's Hardware Emulation of PS2 Games, but said he couldn't afford one because they're collectors items.

Now, I managed to stumble across a NTSC-J CHECHA Model (it's FW 4.55, so can't be cracked unless you want to open it up), which is working and the seal seems to be intact. I tested it a bit and it doesn't seem to have any defects.

So I wonder if those things are still sought after / for which price.

I'm not saying the PS3 itself is rare, but only the 1. Generation = CHECHA had the full Hardware Compatibility for the PS2, after that came the CHECHC/E (depending on PAL or NTSC), which had sort of a Hybrid-Emulation for PS2 Games, despite looking the same. After that came the models without the Flashcard readers and only 2 USB Ports.

Personally, I don't need that backwards compatibility, but it I've seen them go fairly high on U.S. eBay:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sony-PlayStation-3-Backwards-Compatible-60gb-Console-PS3-/122723247555?hash=item1c92e025c3:g:T38AAOSwH2hZtNTv

Tough, I don't know how legit those auctions are, could be someone with a huge stock just wanting to put in a few high prices.

Well, some people collect those things for the sake of it... it's like some of those rare console Games which sell for multiple times as much as they cost new.

I think some people would pay extra for the PS2 emulation, but they would be pretty serious gamers/collectors, and not your casual gamer.

You would likely have to post it on a PS3 specific website that caters to hard core Playstation people.

sounds like a scam
Well... yes and no... I mean... it's the only way to play the original PS2 Games on a console with the best possible resolution unless there are Remakes etc. and the PS3 is also region free (tough, I don't know if that applies only to PS3 Games on the PS3 or all).

So there's a actual selling point, altough I still think it's mostly for collection purposes rather than actually playing on it, since the early models were n't renown for outstanding durability.

Tough, I've also seen people trying to sell jailbroken consoles for 500$+... XD

Yeah, I guess it's a scene thing even in the USA. Here in the EU the real 1. Gen consoles never came to the market, so there's really no scene or anything I've seen.

Emulators would allow for the best possible resolution.

I was steering the conversation in an attempt to get you to tell me you have to use downloaded ISO files to play on emulators.

Emulators are not illegal, but the ISO files you have to use on them are. Theoretically the only way round it is to rip your own ISOs from your discs or cartridges, but this requires 1) owning an original copy of the game in which case you may as well use that on the most recent machine that'll play them like this rarer PS3, and 2) having the specialist equipment / software to rip it. It is unclear as to if this software and equipment is illegal as it could be classed as pirating the original copy, even if for personal use. This has not been attempted as a defense in court yet and it'll be an interesting day when it is.

All this was to say, after a little conversation "the early model PS3 units are the most up to date way to keep playing your favorite PS1 and PS2 games legally".

I am as much 'fun' in conversation in person, too.

Speak for yourself, songs movies and vid games, I definitely haven't.

Pictures I have for personal use, however I have had pictures of my own online taken and used without my permission for public use, so it's an unending circle of grief.
