Interesting.

So the wing design and thruster placement tells me this is going to be one agile ship. And an agile ship with 2xS3 shields? Forget cargo hauling, this one's a tank. A very agile tank. 4xS4 forward facing guns, that's not bad either. Really hate the S1 and S2 missiles though. Ah well.

I mean, those S3 shields can soak up 13k dps. That's like, several medium fighters scoring good hits at once. You thought taking down the shields on that ERT NPC HH was difficult, with its mere 4k hp/s regen? Yeah, wait till you run across a player with 2xS3 FR-86s overclocked. Pure insanity. This is where you *NEED* a torpedo boat. I mean, even my Cutlass Black mission runner only does 2k dps (3k overclocked), and that's with a very reasonable loadout (it's ballistic though, so on average 25% pen). You could also have F7C hornet with similar 2k dps (3k OC), though F7C maybe you'll put a distortion scattergun there and then fly close, could get to 4k dps. (6k OC). But even then you need multiple medium fighters, like at the very least 3 (you quite sure you wanna use 3 distortion scatter guns at close proximity to each other?). Or maybe 2 if you can get a bunch of missiles to hit, not sure how easy that's going to be against a Xian ship.
(Or, maybe I should wait till 3.14 hits, maybe all guns get crazy buffs and 13k hp/s regen is nothing.)

In a lot of ways, it's very similar to M2 Hercules, except it's smaller and nimbler. Probably less hull plating though, but you can't penetrate what you can't hit.

Now, as purely cargo hauler, Hull B may be able to carry a bit more, but Railen can probably fly through some pretty dangerous space without escorts, it seems very combat capable.

On a side note, with this ship going for around $250 once it's flight ready, now sure, there is alien tax and it has more guns and shields than Hull B, but with Hull B currently priced at $90? The difference is just too huge, Hull B $150-$175.

I've just noticed it has six engines. I like a ship with a lotta engines, my endeavour has 9 forward propelling engines (explorer cab included). Moar engines means moar speed, right? Right...?

Points I'd give as advantages over the Hull B and Taurus:

1. defense
2. handling (inside and out of atmo)
3. tractor beams (!!)
4. cool factor

EDIT: that cool elevator! And alien scratchy scratchy time

and disadvantages:

1. price (hull B is 90, taurus is 150, railen is 220).
1. Hull B carries more and can still land on planets. This could change, as the Hull B values are on shit stats page only.
2. Taurus gives the pilot more offensive options without dedicating credits to pay NPC or player crew.
3. Does not carry vehicles (while the taurus does).
4.Your profits will suffer a lot if using any kind of crew... but flying solo will mean no gun, even if bladed turrets are a thing=> the Railen don't have much in terms of computers, only 1 medium (the one used for basic ship operations).

Good summary.

I agree, the Railen looks pretty, but most cargo haulers are flying solo because its boring as shit being the gunner on a cargo run. If you do have a friend, its far better for them to fly escort in a fighter instead of manning a turret. The Taurus will probably be the better option for most.

Well, when selecting a cargo hauler, the way I see it you basically always want bigger/more shields.
Taurus has 2xS2, that's 1k hp/s regen overclocked (FR-series).
Railen has 2xS3, that's 13.5k hp/s regen overclocked (FR-series).

Let's say you're flying alone, and two pirate Cutlass Blacks show up, let's say they got DR Model-XJ3 fixed S3 distortion repeaters on pilot, because they want to disable the target and not destroy it, meanwhile turret gunners got CF-337 Panthers in case they need to blow up some escorts. Anyhow, those two Cutlass Blacks deal 6.5k distortion dps (combined and OCd). You're flying Taurus, it'll take them roughly 2 seconds to eat through one shield face and disable the ship, so that's not going to be much of a fight. You're flying Railen and you can just forget they're there, because they're not getting through your shields, even if those turret gunners tried to assist in taking down shields. I suppose they could be launching some missiles, but if they want to actually steal the cargo instead of blowing it up, well, too low yield and that shield will just regen right back up and too great and the cargo will get destroyed.

Anyhow, Railen will be too tough for lot of small pirate fleets to handle, it'll take something bit crazy, like a pirate Constellation Andromeda with 2xS5 + 2xS4 distortion scatterguns overclocked for 18k dps (actually, wouldn't that be kinda good idea?), that'd still take 9 seconds firing from incredibly close, might be difficult to keep up with a Xian ship for that long, we'll see how nimble it'll actually be, but I'm guessing faster and more manoeuvrable than a connie.

Good analysis here!

Im going through the normal buyers remorse right now, but the 2xS3 shields and speed probably mean you do not have any problem simply flying right through any group of pirates trying to attack you.

ima save this one for ingame purchase i love the idea nd i love xian ships but its a cargo hauler not really in my forte. What i want to see is an alien refinery ship or a alien salvager i would be on that lot hot cakes.

And thinking like a pirate, the Railen could be the equivalent of a very boring job. Doable? yes, but too much work... I saw some privateering comments on how Carrack and C2 as harder targets, presently, even in default loadout. The Railen being faster (?) and smaller (is it?) makes it less attractive for pickings.

A taurus or, specially, a Hull B will be easy targets for even a single cutlass black

I see some ppl saying this is redundant unnecessary ship, cos we already have cargo ship at home...
I like it. I like it because it gives more variety to the life in the verse once civilian traffic goes live in a couple of years. The more non-combat ships the better imo

I won't be getting one but maybe in 10 years time if I'm still alive I will grab one in the live game lol

Hmm, the Taurus is listed as 26m wide x 61m long, the base freelancer is 23.5m wide x 38m long.

With the Railen being 52x53 I wonder if it will be limited to medium and larger jump points (when those actually become a thing).

I think they previously said the freelancer would be the largest ship that would fit through small size jump points but we dont know if they mean simply width or mass or agility etc.
Another thing to factor in when comparing these ships I guess.
