It reduces your slide into a turn.

I have yet to find the button.
Hold Left Alt + Pres V to cycle Safeties (ComStab, G-Lock)

ComStab = Computer Stabilization --- prevents you from turning to much/per speed causing a 'slide'.
Tip: Do a 10% roll while turning fast - This will prevent a blackout as it counters the affect of the G-forces.

Wow. I wish I had of known all that a few months ago.
Now If I could get it to work again.
I am pretty used to slides now though. hmm. interesting.

In combat it is better to have comstab off (default comstab is off) :
COMSTAB attempts to limit this experience by firing thrusters in the opposite direction of the slide to eliminate the slide or drift. This has the benefit of keeping the nose of the ship where the pilot expects it to be, while having the side-effect of limiting overall possible maneuvering and speed.
Better to have your nose pointed to your target, shooting and drifting then have a more controlled turn but wait longer to get your target in sight ;)
The only problem off course are those nasty rocks that tend to bump against you when sliding in the wrong direction :D

Agreed. I think it's better off now that I know what it does. Thanks for the replies.
