I can fully understand why the Polaris is taking it this year, and the answer is very simple. It is a complete ship for small group play. Mine is a laughably inexpensive CCU version and even then I had lots of doubts about the viability of a torpedo-based capital. Those doubts turned out to be valid, BUT also.. not so important. Because it shines in day-to-day play for most of the things there are to do. Everyone in my normal weekend group owns at least a Connie; we never pull them out for group play anymore.
We've used it in Arena Commander, for missions/exploration in Pyro, for the Gilly sequence, and it gave a viable way to collect massive amounts of SCU from the combat missions when the elevators were broken. The hangar lets our dedicated fighter jock come along as well as an ambulance to rescue him lol. The medbeds have saved several gaming sessions and look to become even more valuable going forward.
The ship has a tough time with the Idris; CIG have publicly acknowledged it is underperforming at capital combat, even as they nerfed the dumbfire ability.
I'm not interested in whatever ugly-ass paint will come out of the Ship Showdown, or in arguing the ways in which CIG biased the outcome. The Polaris is capable of standing on it's own abilities.
