Small Ships all have Jump Drives now?

So I was browsing the new ship matrix, and what caught my eye was that all the small ships like the Razor and the M50 all are jump capable now. If this is true and not a matrix screw up, this opens up some other career options for speedsters.

Maybe it was my misconception then. I always thought the snubs and small ships would not get a jump drive, thus the need of hauler vehicles to lung them around for races etc. But it's good to have a confirmation that these little ones are jump capable now.

The Aurora line, for example, has the slot for a jump drive but no drive as standard, apart from the LX which gets it in ship as default loadout.

A lot of small ships don't have a drive fitted, but can take one.

Well seem you are forgetting one thing jumping is not free even if a ship can jump any type of jump after 3.0 as in quantum or wormhole thingy jumps...

Most ship can't do long jumps unless you can route your jumps past fueling station and here is where "jumping is not free" comes in.
To make large jumps you need fuel and a fuel reserve big enough for it or doing a long jump with a small craft will unless they increased the tanks on ships put a dent in that thought.

I doubt you see a Aurora do a 23+ million km jump as it did in the Citizen Con demo in the game since they often take some Dev shortcuts in demos just too show of how it might be but don't mean you really going to be able to do it like that when it's game ready as in PTU/PU.

But it shore would be really nice if they increased the fuel tanks and range on all ships, for as they are in 2.6+ it's kinda ridiculous to think the ships in the game is suppose to be 900 years in to the future and that is all that's been achieved in 900 years...

I think this is actually the only way an Idris, Polaris or Jav could sustain say a squadron of smaller ships. If it can't jump with you then the cap ship is stuck with a patrol of 3 ships or in the case of the Polaris and Jav 1.

At least this way you could refuel and rearm the smaller vessels by rotating through the hanger.

I do sort of wish that they'd made the Idris longer or deeper so it could hold say 3 on the flight deck and 3 in maintenance. But then it would be equivalent to an LHD.

I'm actually thinking it might be more fun if CIG scaled the ships so a corvette, frigate (make a new frigate), Javellin, Idris/LHD alike were all player ownable BUT the big dogs ie Cruiser, Battlecruiser, Pegasus, Bengal, Battleship/Dreadnought (ie Retribution) were all far more powerful, numerous and crucially hugely difficult for even a huge org to maintain without building out supply chain, dry dock, home port station and the protection that requires, tugs, weapon and fuel storage.

When you say 23million km + jump do you mean Quantum? When I say jump I mean Jump Drive through a Jump Hole to an entirely different star system...

But I get what you mean. It'll all come in the balancing, my Aurora LX currently has more Quantum Fuel than my Connie. I expect actual fuel tank loads to mean nothing as I expect some Quantum engines to burn fuel fast and some slow. An engine that burns Q twice as fast as another needs a tank twice as big to go the same distance.

I get Jump and Quantum Travel mixed up all the time to the point that I don't know what I'm saying anymore.

The Cutlass also has no jump drive as standard I believe but can have one installed but may be wrong.

The two that caught my attention is the Gladius and the Gladiator that were suppose to be carrier based now have jumpdrives and no longer say they are meant to be carrier based. Other than that it had been posted before that a lot of the ships came stock with one but it wasn't showing in the matrix.

all the cutlass series come with jumpdrives equipped of medium size that was posted in the Q&A I believe a long time ago but they may have said it somewhere else. they just weren't showing up on the matrix and they were aware of it.

CIG has said in the past they will revisit the whole issue of which small ships cannot jump, but if you want to cruise the planets on the race circuit, constantly tweaking your ride for best performance, probably the thing is own a Crucible. That's what they're for. As one who grew up in an automotive garage, I will own the notion of taking your garage with you, has a lot of appeal to it.

That seems exactly the issue. There are many parts of the planned cosmos that do not have refueling points for many systems, where only long range craft can go, and where Starfarers can earn money setting up as refuelers, so long as they have adequate security. The farther one goes from the core, the less frequent refueling is and the more dangerous it gets to fly.

That’s were being part of a large org will come in handy that has the ships to refuel or carry you to where you need to go. If we settle in lawless space remember that if it’s to far you could hitch a ride on a hauler and have your ship broken down into cargo that can make it.

considering the exploration ships don't say they have more than one quantum fuel tank there maybe engine upgrades that can make it so they can make it further. For example if you look at the Freelancer DUR it says it is exploration and has bigger tanks and engines and a improved jump drive but yet it only has it listed as a single medium Quantum Fuel Tank and medium jump drive just like the rest of the Freelancer series. It may change in the future but we only have limited information on it. Right now its the same on all the exploration variants that I have looked at for quantum fuel tank and jump drive size on the ship matrix compared to none exploration variants . We have time before exploration is a thing beyond exploring the moons we will have in 3.0 I am sure they are not done yet with changes to the matrix. The Gladius is listed as a good escort ship in the description it makes one wonder if you won't be able to make it for several small jumps or how much it actually takes to go through a wormhole of a larger size which you should be able to do just not one that is smaller than you can fit in otherwise the escort ships like the vanguard wouldn't be able to stay with the ship they are escorting if its of a larger size because they would arrive in different areas and perhaps at different times. I am sure there will be sacrifices to be made to make some upgrades but if there is small size exploration jump drives and small size larger than normal quantum fuel tanks that make ships go further its pry just paying for the upgraded stuff and what the drawbacks will be of having it to dictate if its worth it. This is all just speculation since we don't know a ton about the upgrade potential of the ships and how the modularity system will work in the end for what you can and can't do on what ships or if it will actually work like this at all.

I think the plan is to make how much fuel you can carry part of what each owner can to some degree, customize. For instance, I think if you remove the missiles from the Reliant Tana, you can fit the extra tanks of the Sen. You might decide to remove half the Tana's missiles and put in just one extra tank--seems to me a useful option. From looking at the ships page, it appears small, medium and large are all relative to the craft they are in, and just give general notions of the craft's range. That range should change too, if you swap out the engines. Keep in mind, this is how CIG plans to make their money. They want players to heavily customize their craft and those customizations do not survive the destruction of the craft, so players will then want to replace expensive components sometimes with real money.

The game is going to be expensive to anyone who owns lots of ships or gets them blown up regularly, unless you are flying stock like a Raven, and note that does not come with LTI.

Hmm does anyone remember if quantum and jump fuel can be refined or scooped from say a gas giant? Were they all going to need a land/ship based refinery aka the Nostromo?
Just a thought, if say I want to jump into unexplored alien space and need to refuel where no refueling station has gone before, is it possible to scoop fuel from the system somehow?

it was stated when they changed to small, medium and Large from the number size modules for that stuff that the ships would be restricted to that size module. While replacing engines and tanks you will have to stay in the small, medium or large ranges which is really only related to the size of the ship and not how far it can go or how many jumps it can make. Otherwise there would be no small ships that could explore because they wouldn't be able to have the fuel abilities to make it anywhere that wasn't already discovered or had a place to refuel.

Once the game goes live and in 3.x even in 3.0 they showed them buying a gun for the Aquila they were using at gamescon 2016 in game. Its odd you would think they would make it so you had to keep spending real world money to buy the stuff when they said when its released you won't be able to buy the ships and upgrades directly from them anymore because you will purchase them in game with in game currency. I am pretty sure after launch its going to be buy to play with an optional subscription with benefits like they have now and people buying squadron 42 and DLC since they already said squadron 42 will come in three parts and that only people that backed before it hit six million in funds will get the second part for free. Who is to say that Star Citizen won't also have DLC content that subscribers would get for free or maybe just a micro-transaction store where you can buy ship skins or armor skins and other cosmetic items or decorations that don't make the game pay to win and expansions will be free. You will pry have the ability to buy UEC for the lazy people that don't want to have to work for it or just don't want to have to wait to buy something in game or want to give themselves a little more UEC to get started after they buy the game(I am not judging as long as you spend some of it on beer). Either way they wouldn't be buying the actual items for real world cash just the currency they could turn into whatever they decide to spend it on. It would also make it interesting when theft of cargo or wars happen because like EVE everything would have a real world value but you can still earn everything in game without buying the currency from them and it would just be an option for people that wanted it not a requirement every time you lost your upgrades you have to spend real world cash to replace them that would be pay to win.

Edit to add clarity:
I guess you could say replace them sometimes with real world money if they bought the UEC they just wouldn't be buying the upgrade from the website like you can now is what I am saying.

IIUC, all ships can scoop fuel given enough time, but only ships like the StarFarer and StarG can refine it for jump travel. So if you get stuck across system, you can get yourself out of trouble, but if you get stuck in an empty system, you have to wait for help to come.

I think you misunderstood. While you cannot take a small tank out and stick a large tank in its place, you can take other systems out and put tanks in their place. This would allow a single tank upgrade. I did not make up the example of the Tana's missiles. It was brought up by others when the Reliant was first released. The Sen is supposed to have an extended range because it has additional tanks. The thing that really nerfed that ride was when they pulled the bed out and put the "access panels" in its place. No word whether they'll put the bed back when the release the Sen, but if they do you should expect it will not have the missiles of the Tana.

BTW, if the Mustang's new external cargo unit can be fit as a fuel tank, that bird is going to be really interesting for solo exploration.

Before this update, all ships larger than a Snub could fit a jump drive, but many didn't have them listed because they weren't fitted as standard. I recall CR saying a new player would start in a ship without a jump drive, earn UEC playing in their starting system, then buy & fit a jump drive once they've got the hang of the game and made some money. Not sure if that's still planned, but it would be a good way to make a semi-tutorial without limiting gameplay.
