I don't know how it is with you all, but I stopped talking about Star Citizen. It felt too much like I was trying to convince my friends that the earth is flat. It's like bringing up the name Star Citizen lowers people's opinion of me. Like I am suddenly gullible and easily misguided. To the general public, I feel we aren't able to be publicly optimistic without looking foolish.

That is, until the SQ42 demo came out. When I linked it to my gaming friend group, there was the usual rabble. It was everything we all have heard a million times by now. Then, nothing. They clicked the video and watched enough to shut up. Since then, most of them have started up a conversation with me. So here's what I get out of it. It's promising. It's enough to make people curious, but not enough to openly discuss it yet. There's too much of a history of setbacks and delays. But it's a start.

One of these promising steps are videos like this. They are openly critical, but cautiously and practically optimistic.

I'm waiting for the day anyone I know goes 'hey have you heard about this incredible new game? I think you'd like it, it seems like it's be just your thing and takes games to the next level!' and then talks about it like we have been for a decade :-D

Regarding talking about SC, I got my 2 good friends a game package ages ago. One playes with me now, during IAE and such events, and the other is waiting patiently. Anyone else I mention it to, even if interested, comes back at me with things like: unless it's coming on PS5 I don't care. And he thinks he is a gamer... gawd....

Anyways, WTF do you mean by cautious optimism? In that video? WHERE???

I happened upon that trash video yesterday. That's the most fake drama for views clickbait shit ever. The only real desperation in that video was Bellendular's to get enough hate clicks on his video.
What I was most disgusted about is the tone he takes while spewing lies, like he is worried, like he cares, like he isn't a 100% biased against CIG and doing this for the hate clicks.

Bellular has some decent videos sometimes but his latest trend is to put out as much hate-click inducing "OMG here's the full story/it's worse then 911" type of fake shit as possible, with close to no substance behind it.
Regarding this vid of his, every single allegation and "critic" is basically omitting half of reality to make CIG sound as bad as possible while keeping the fake veneer of honest objectivity.

For instance , since when the fuck do you get severance pay if YOU decide to leave the company? No you fucking don't (at least not in any western country I know of) yet he takes 10 minutes to shit on CIG that they are bastards for linking it to NDAs that people had to sign when they wanted to leave or they wouldn't get paid... It's just a bullshit sentence, mixing things on purpose to make you think CIG is evil.
OFC they do have to sign an NDA, I couldn't name you a white collar job where you aren't bound by some form of secrecy, even if it'"s just for basic shit like how much the company got paid for a certain job... Absolute BS....
He makes it out like hundreds left the company, has no proof for anything, and conveniently omits the fact that the studio moved and the few that didn't or couldn't make it just left on their own...

Then the work one or two? weekends thing. He keeps repeating it to make it sound worse, while he reads the actual leak that basically translates to "no one actually expects you to do anything worthwhile on Sunday, cos you can just work from home". Then he goes on to ignore the fact that everyone gets 2 days off per weekend day they had to work (I think that's the law, at least here it is, not something that CIG can just give or take away...), right after CitCon.
Do I need to break down the rest of his lies or we done here?

This constant negativity, especially when hidden behind the facade of honesty, is actually an issue that CIG HAS TO FIX before SQ42 launch. They have 2 years, they better start paying IGN to start posting positive vibes about SC/Squadron. As you said, everyone thinks of SC as a scam, and it's been so long that they cannot be convinced otherwise with anything, not even the demo unless they are already on the edge and just looking for an excuse to jump ship.

I listen to some of these normy media podcasts like SideGrifters (SideScrollers if you must know). They are one of those channels that normies turn to when they are fed up with IGN giving yet another unplayable mess of AAA game a 9/10, and want to hear some hate, want to feel like they are "real, edgy gamers". Just a couple of days ago this was spoken: "well at least this game did something and came out after 10 years unlike Some space game, khm, Star Citizen.." then all 3 hosts proceeded to nod and laugh at it. Chat went wild with hating on SC, spewing the same old rhetoric, attacking the few that tried to say soemthing not so negative about the recent demo or progress... The attacks got ignored by mods. It's the norm to hate on SC.
THE chat that consists of those who are actually THE potential market for CIG.
Even those who depict themselves as the good guys, the unbiased gamers, for gamers and so on like sidegrifters, bellular and so on, keep ignoring anything and everything that might change their audiences absolutely negative view on SC, and will continue to do so, because it has become the norm, and it pays well.

One of the better talks I've heard after Citcon was the Space Tomato ( an actually good SC channel with real criticism) interview with access-media paid shill Luke Stephens, who keeps acting like he likes the project and he doesn't put out a "CIG is trash" video every 6 months for hate-clicks. He is one who tells you that SW Outlaws was a perfectly fine 7/10 at launch (despite the fact it was a primitive, buggy hellscape, even to a seasoned SC veteran) ... This should tell you everything you need to know about him. BUT, he made a very good point, that unless CIG doubles down on positive marketing very very fast, and starts fighting the lies.

The mass media will trash SQ42 unless they get paid off, because that's what their owners and their readers expect. They will nitpick it to hell for the smallest things even if it's a perfect 10/10 bugless god-tier game, which it most def won't be, and apart from a group of SC players, most won't buy it. They will refuse to believe that it's anything but a scam. They will cancel their favorite independent reviewers on YT if they dare go against their negativity bias. I've seen it happen before, it will happen to Squadron again. Something BIG has to happen, CIG really has to get this right. For our sakes, for Star Citizen.

I still won't recommend SC to a friend. Why? Because all CR did (and remember, it was CR that named the date), is confirm the meme that SQ42 is two years away. SQ42 is ALWAYS 2 years away until it actually launches...or at least until I see print ads...and CR has never mentioned a date he has not missed.

Sorry, I love SC, but I cannot in good conscious recommend it to anyone I would call a friend.

the Squadron 42 video brought me back for a little while, to read up on what i have missed.
Seeing the base building panel, made me want to rework my entire fleet into a base builder specialization.

but it's still a long way off before those things will be in game, so while it's great to see what squadron 42 will be (everything i hoped, Starlancer) the good features are still years away.

I know this feeling all too well. LoL Though, when that time comes, I look forward to asking how long they've been playing it and if they'd like to meet up in game to hang out & see what sort of things we can get into. Eventually, they'll realize that we've been backing for a bit longer than they've been playing, so we might have a slight lead in what we're capable of achieving, but I'm sure that most of us would be happy to help teach them how to catch up.

Yeah, I've watched lots of content from Bellular for years. I'm surprised that he even noticed Star Citizen enough to give it a glance, let alone that he was such a fan of the project back near the beginning. He's got his head so far up Blizzard's ass, especially pertaining to World of Warcraft, I'm surprised that he didn't start accidentally calling the characters in what he'd seen as knock off versions of major NPC WoW characters. Perhaps his bias is that should ever WoW be overthrown by the gaming community, the majority of his gaming "journalism" career will effectively become irrelevant? Here's hoping that when things work out with Squadron, that he'll have the integrity to eat the crow he cooked with this vid of his by admitting that he was wrong.

When I discuss SC with people, I make sure to explain that it's still in development, that it's often bugged due to still being developed & that it's not as optimized as it could be if the creation of the game had been completed. I also tell them that IF they are interested in it, for them to create a free account & use a referral code from a current backer in order to receive 5k in game creds when the game launches and that once they do so, they'll be able to play SC for free each time there is a Free Fly Event. That IF after playing during 1 of those they love the game enough to spend money on it, they can purchase a game package & be able to play it whenever they want after that. Then point out that the best times to purchase those is either when a new "Starter ship" is initially offered for sale, OR during either the IAE or ILW annual events as well as why & when those are. I also recommend checking out multiple streamers playing SC to get an initial idea of what it's like.

I have about 10 gamer friends I know through work. co-workers, people in my industry (our industry is large, but the same ones interact with each other, so it's also small), people in associations, etc. This does not include the friends I made through gaming.

I have been asked about SC by every one of them, and for every one of them I have said that unless you enjoy TESTING the game, figuring out bugs, putting in bug reports, and essentially paying for the "privilege" of being an unpaid QC member for a game dev, they should stay FAR away from it until it launches. When they tell me that they see the adds and that it is "Live" I tell them that the marketing is first rate, but it's not any kind of release, just another alpha and they start to figure it out....

"In the next 2 years..."
Isn't it funny that the people criticising CIG for this neverending Alpha use that same measure for how long Star Citizen will continue it's obvious death struggle.
In 2 years time they'll be bancrupt.
In 2 years time there will be no on playing this mess of a game.
In 2 years time they'll ... wait ... uh... pretty Squardon 42 Demo... err... where was I?
Ah yes, THAT game.

Star Citizen tries to do that Icarus thing and fly high with, let's face it, only loosely attached wings.
Obviously people watch and speculate. Will it fly? Or crash? Most of the time people want to see both.

Now commentators, soothsayers and other experts try to predict the direction this project is going, weight it against public opinion, and then go with a (sometimes) locigal explanation that sits well with the majority of the audience.
They need the add fees after all.
Chances are they'll rather cry havoc!!! than speak softly.
Because a video with "Scandal!" in the title get's more clicks than one sporting "This is somewhat nice".

So what did we learn today?
That most streamers are servants of opinion, not truth.
And why would they be anything else?
They are no journalists and not sworn to "speak nothing but".

Still, CIG does need better PR.
Some soft-spoken people who are willing to reach out and properly talk to some of these people personally.

I agree, media today is more about reporting opinion than fact. Propaganda is paramount, and everyone shall hear our truth...no matter how shaded it might be. Those other people with differing opinions are (insert your choice of name calling here) and therefore should not be listened to.

Do I believe CR when he says 2026? No. Because he has missed every deadline to date. He has absolutely no credibility when it comes to dates. However, I do recognize that he is under internal pressure to "get it done" by their investors.

Was the demo good? Yes...but let's face it, look at how much gameplay there actually was compared to the amount of cinematics. If there was 20 minutes of actual gameplay in that 75 minute demo, I would be surprised. Yes, I include the "interactive" parts where you sit and listen as part of the cutscenes.

Am I concerned? No. I am sure that SQ42 will be released at some point. But I have concerns that it might be pushed out due to investor impatience rather than it really being "done"

However, CIG SEEMS to have decided that it needs to cut promised features or to make wholesale changes to the original design and will be pushing out a MVP rather than a good viable product.

For instance, now that we have been reduced to 5 star systems, how will exploration work?

The PvP focus, along with the extreme punishment that comes from dying, will seem to favor throwaway characters. Build ships in safe space using your mains, but then use throwaways when going to areas where death is more likely.
