So far in this game i have mostly focused on being self sufficient when building my fleet. But joining TEST got me thinking.. Maybe i should start focusing a bit more towards a role profession in here. Still on the fence on what to go for though.. I'm leaning towards medic, as i love support roles, but i also like mining and crafting/repairing. And salvaging with a Reclaimer looks just awesome! I do hope we get other ambulance options too, as I'm not a huge fan of the Cutlass Red. A terrapin with a medbay would be awesome.

Help me choose guys. What do you think?

Join all of them! A good majority of us will not be doing one single thing. I personally am involved with the medic group and the rock raiders (industry group).

Whatever you do choose, theres lots of us to help you out.

(PS-Terrapin is too small and probably wont be able to fit much inside it; however, the freelancer ships could make a good alternate ambulance)

I'm going to be completely subjective and give a big thumbs up to the medical profession.
I, too, am waiting for a mid-sized option medical/SAR. The Red is too small for me and the Endeavor Hope is too big. I'm hoping for a Constellation-sized medical ship.
Just get the ships that appeal most to you and remember that when the game drops, TEST will have plenty of everything and we all love to share.

I'm going to parrot @Printimus and say that it's very unlikely that you'll end up completely dedicated to a single role. We'll expect to see a lot of combat from other orgs and missions so as a medic you should always have work to do, but sometimes you'll want to do something different.

Ultimately, until player roles get implemented and fleshed out, don't worry too much about it. You might find that you don't like being a medic, but love running resupply ops into combat zones, or doing some other just as crucial support job.

The boats geared specifically to certain jobs, especially jobs yet to be implemented (which, I guess is all of them but fighter combat), I have been reluctant to get interested in. Will mining be fun? Beats me. Will scanning be fun? Beats me. Kind of want to see how things like that play before sinking cash into it.
Things like medical or repair, even refueling, however fun they turn out to be, will certainly be helpful. And being helpful can be it's own fun!

We may end up seeing certain types of equipment that can be operated from cargo bays. So maybe you could set up a pretty effective clinic or tinker shop in the back of a Freelancer variant or anything with a decent cargo bay. Maybe there will be a 600i variant for fancy-shmancy outer space hair salons!

I'd say wait and see rather than commit now. If the Eclipse is the last combat focused boat, at least for now, maybe some of the concepts coming next will peak your (and my) interest.

We have no idea what will be fun in game. Right now, we have no professions other than combat pilot, but I think if you like the ICC missions, you will probably lean towards exploring/combat. If you like finding stuff the wrecks in asteroid fields, then you might be an explorer/salvager. If you like the comm sat mission, you are probably police/combat oriented.

Can't help you on anything else as nothing else is implemented...My suggestion...wait and see.

We will be getting all of the careers to help test as we move forward into 3.0 and beyond.
I suggest waiting & trying out several or all of them. I certainly will.
You have plenty of time before committing to a fleet of ships.
Besides, everyone will need good crew members or pilots they trust.

I think its best to keep your options open and try out everything that you can. If one particular role/profession is more enjoyable or you are really good at it, then by all means commit to that. Even still, always be prepared to know the basics of every role in case you find yourself needing to fill in a spot.

I, for instance, once thought I'd always love rum. But here I am, drinking beer.
That doesn't mean you don't still love rum though. I do agree. Also, it could be that some of the "professions" in game aren't designed to be a full time gig, or simply don't have enough depth (initially anyway) to keep you engaged long enough to make that your "thing". Obviously that won't be the intention, and I believe CIG will honestly look at and improve areas that are lacking, but we'll have to wait for beyond 3.0 to get an idea on anything that's not "pew pew die".

True fact. Although rum tends to get me white girl wasted now. I rarely drink hard bar anymore.

And yes, concur. With both you and @Thalstan. Keep your options open, for big group and solo. And it may certainly take time to develop and implement the intricacies of all the trades, especially some of the specialized stuff.
