And you thought that flying was unsafe with all the laser pens being pointed at cockpits --- what could possibly go wrong with selling these?

Only 800 Lumen? Yeah its a good marketing gimmick but its not exactly the sun on earth is it?

To put it this way, the brightest of sunny days is 100,000 Lux, a cloudy day between 5000 and 10,000 Lux.

1 Lux is the illumination of a surface 1 meter away from 1 candle.

Whats that got to do with Lumen? This:

The relationship between lumens & lux
One Lux is defined as being equivalent to one lumen spread over an area of one square metre, or to put it another way – a measurement of lux (light intensity) tells you how many lumens (total light output) you need given the area you are trying to illuminate.

So 1000 lumens, concentrated into an area of one square metre, lights up that square metre with a light intensity (illuminance) of 1000 lux. The same 1000 lumens, spread out over ten square metres, produces a dimmer illuminance of only 100 lux.

Therefore, lighting a larger area to the same measurement of lux requires a larger number of lumens – which is usually achieved by increasing the number of light fixtures (and the power consumed).

So zooming that lens on the end in and out is also going to have an effect on your lumen output. Its marketing, just marketing.

The torch may be pretty bright over a 1 sq ft area in front of you, but it's not like it has the power of a Million Candles is it? (incidentally those old million candle torches were between 1200 and 1500 lumen - the two are not directly convertible but its a close estimate).

Thanks for shining a light on that for us. ;)
