What motivates you to buy ships?

I'm curious as to what motivates the guys who buy tons of expensive ships? I backed Star Citizen at the lowest tier possible to get the game I think. I just have an Aurora. I'd like to get a ship like the Freelancer eventually I think based on what I've read about it. However, what I read about it and what it will actually be like in the game is up in the air. I could buy a Freelancer and then get in the game and completely hate it. Without the context of actually flying the ship and playing the game it's just a gamble.

I don't see the point in dishing out hundreds or thousands of dollars based on basically advertisements for ships that aren't complete and a game that isn't complete. All these ships will be able to be earned in game. Some of them probably within a few hours or tens of hours and the biggest ones probably in hundreds of hours. If I started the game in some OP ship I would be depriving myself of the game experience. I guess some guys just have a lot of disposable income to blow on these things.

Ive spent about 450usd, (incl my centurion subscription) i added up the money for the other ships i wanted and its like 700usd, doubt ill be able to afford that

Nothing, I bought my last ship over two years ago. I've handed over as much money as I'm comfortable to CIG until they actually get their act together.

Opportunity costs. I would rather be jumping right in on day one having a blast rather than worry about optimizing my play to get to some of the ships I want. To each their own. :)

If we were buying ships for Squadron42 then it would definitively ruin the pre designed level progression.
Sandbox MMO's are completely different. The game doesnt go from starter ship A to endgame ship Z, those ships are nothing but tools that allow you to do interesting stuff. The game just wont survive even 1-2 years if its build around ship progression. (Much like a singleplayer campaign that is forgotten in 1 month)

World of Warcraft, most people claim that the game only begins when reaching your level cap. GTA Online, did you ever hear anyone say: i bought a 1 mil supercar or a 3 mil combat hellicopter, i guess its time to stop. No, its when you can finally start racing and messing with people by blowing their sh1t up.

Orgs and politics is what keeps sandbox mmos interesting for years, and you can contribute most to your org by using the best tool available for a specific job. Plus there will be enough progression in ship- and personal upgrades. (Max upgrades for constellation are more expensive than a ship itself)

Well first the obvious. I wanted to support Chris Roberts and bought Aurora starter. I noticed that VAT was coming. I did panic and used more money to buy Super Hornet. I though this would be my thing. I played arena commander and I was bad and I still am. Then I checked forums and etc... wondering is there anything else I could do. I did set boundaries how much I would pledge and within these limits I started to build up my "own fleet". (The sum is exactly same what I have spent to World Of Warcaft)

You are depriving yourself from the bragging rights when showcasing your ridiculously expensive ship

I like that I've got immediate access to the ships I've pledged for. I like that the money pledged to went to the development of the game and that my Imperator subscription is helping fund all the videos that we watch and the big events they schedule.

I know that even if I don't like a particular ship, I can sell it (either on the grey market for cash, or in game post launch) so it's not like it's going to completely feel like "money down the drain" should I be disappointed. Besides, unless they seriously expand the voyager direct store (which they may once the PU gets close/launches) the only thing I can buy to improve the ship is things that go "pew pew". The "advantage" of having a ship right off the bat is pretty well balanced by the fact that it will be mostly stock and you still have to spend time in game getting it upgraded.

I guess I look at it this way. I want this game to succeed. If I could have backed Star Wars Galaxies II for several thousand dollars I would have. Instead I'm going with the next best thing. Smart? Probably not. Am I passionate about it? Yes. Will I have the time to play it? Who knows. That's why I don't mind getting a bunch of ships. Plus when I die, it's not like I get to take my money with me.

My wife always tells me "a fool and his money are soon parted..." not sure what she's trying to say there....

I just try to buy the ships for the jobs/missions that I think am going to enjoy once/if this game ever goes live. The last thing I want to do is having to wash space toilets on someone else's ship for cash to be able to buy my own nicer better ship.

The help create the Best Damn Space Sim Ever. This is the game many of us have only dreamed about, so I want it to happen!

I have a lot of ships at this point and for many, I have no idea how much I'm going to use them, if at all, but I'm planning on having most of them when the game goes live, finding out which ones I like the best, then parting with the rest, preferably by barrel rolling them into the sun.

A couple of reasons. For one, I like collecting the different ships, and having a something for every situation. By having a wide variety of ships, I should never have to say "dang, I can't do that, none of my ships are capable." What I can do, and what I'm looking forward to, is being able to find people to go out an do whatever strikes our fancy.

I also can justify it because I want this game to be good. I'm willing to donate, to put a silly amount of money into game, because this is the game that I have always wanted, ever since I was a little kid. I'm willing to blow a lot of dough to make a childhood dream come true.

I'm just passionate about the game. I won't buy any more, I can't afford it, and I'm a little worried. Even though I'm purchasing because the ships I have are excellent, a bit of it may be because I want to see the game through rather than just have good ships to start.

For me it basically comes down to 'Why not?'
I fully accept that I could save the money now and earn it in game but I have the money now, it's not going on anything else and the excitement of buying a ship, watching it develop and then drooling over it in my hanger is enough for me, even before I can fly it.
Don't get me wrong, I intend to save and buy ships in game too but I don't want to start on an Aurora, I'd rather start on say a Vanguard and then save for bigger multicrew ships.

Plus the more money CIG gets, the less likely there is of the game failing...

I pledge for ships to a) support the game development.

and b) to get ships that look/sound cool without having to grind for them. I'd personally rather focus on pimping out the ships I have, than getting a bunch of new ship hulls.

Has huge guns and looks shiny, sold !

But seriously, to support the game development and skip the grind for them.
The LTI is always a plus, since ill be crashing or exploding hell of a lot.
