What should this US Government Employee do, during the shut down?

Well, I was going to suggest wanking. Ejaculating at least 21 times a month reduces your risk of prostate cancer by roughly 20%. (But ejaculating 100 times a month doesn't reduce it by 100%)
There are 2 kinds of people ... those who can extrapolate...

I remember the last time I was working for the US government during a shutdown. It was absolute chaos where I was at with people not knowing what was going to happen, or how they were going to stay afloat. I was on the military side of things so I wasn't really impacted.

I say grab a case of your preferred beverage, download any games you want during the steam sale, and pull all nighters nerding out in those games or SC until you're forced to go back to being a productive member of society :P

All jokes aside, I'm big on doing whatever gives you enjoyment in a healthy way. If you are looking for something outside of gaming, I really enjoy combat sports. Though it is a huge time and financial commitment depending on the facility. Some places are pretty standard (like $100/mo). Others are...insane. But the thing is, it's just as fun as gaming...and you sometimes get to kick someone's ass for basically free. It's great for your ego too. Nothing gets your mind right like getting your ass kicked by a dude half your size with tons more experience than you.

One bucket list item I want to do, is to take my PC to a movie theater and hook it up to the projector there and play Star Citizen on it. I know the response would be shitty and all. But just having the entire theater to myself and internet spaceships would be so awesome. Probably better to do that when it releases though.

Let's see what else...hiking is a good one. My fatass can barely make it up the tiny mountains where I'm at...we don't have bears or anything remotely dangerous so just be aware of what you have going on there. If you have any local ranges (guns, archery) that do live fire or night fire events, those are cool. Sometimes they have some of the big boy guns out there with tracers if you're into that kind of thing. Hunting of course is always fun, I only hunt to stock my freezer for a year or so. Usually one decent sized elk will do it. Tons of fun, similar to hiking if you do it "right" but just with a gun added to your loadout. Hockey games a pretty fun, a lot of times I think they are more fun than football. And I used to work for one of the college football teams currently in the playoffs (blasphemy on my part). If you have room to do any woodworking on the side, that can be fun as well as make you a shit ton of money if you're good enough. My cousin asks for my help on really big projects sometimes, he basically makes $5k a week easily. I mean it's a lot of work, and you have to know what you're doing. But there is at least something good to having those types of skills even just for your own home. Another thing you could do to pass the time is give me all of your expensive ships! Kidding. I ran out of ideas :P I'll shut up now.

Lol, IWS is pretty interesting but too related to the use of a tech of an unique company. Anyway by example with the neuronal network tools you can generate trained networks for use with one of, supposedly, open source neural network libraries which is good.
In my case I have personal projects I would do, from small games to a compiler, and publish some algorithms (which I am going to do with the first system)

I'm a Senior IT Project Manager, since 1997. My life has been spent in Technology, but not programmed since my Army Days (Encryption Programmer/Analyst during Desert Shield/Storm). I recently took a role with the Dept of Treasury/IRS. I am kind of planning on staying there for awhile, but that doesn't mean I can't learn new and exciting things.

Or watch porn all week.
You should get a job out here during shutdowns we are always still manned if you are already on the GS scale then it would not be hard at all.

Shit, he could go out there, work, AND buy a bitchin' new car!
The thing that sucks here is you dont get to see family(The non married ones) for a long time, The overtime can be demanding sometimes(I think i'm going to be stuck in overtime mode every weekend for the next 3 months maybe more depending how fast i work) and you have to leave every 5 years due to the 5 year rule.(Unless you have an important enough position then you can be extended over and over every 2 years) Contractors dont have to leave but you could be fired at anytime(Not that i ever see any useful ones get fired but you better have some good certs or you going to be at the bottom of the food bowl).

I'm brand new to the ecosystem, and have to wait to apply for other roles after 1/29/19. They have some open reqs for nationwide PM roles that are internal to IRS, hoping to snag one of those. If you have anything you want to pass along to me, I'm very happy to check out links/postings!

There was an IT security position open last week at my command but its already closed.

I did run accross this one though its not at my command but still worth a shot depending on what your skillset is.

I have a question, if you go and get another job, will you leave it when the shutdown ends and go back to the govt job?
When he says Excepted that means hes still working for the government but he isnt getting paid right now. usually when this happens once the government reopens the next pay period they are back paid for their time they didnt get paid. It's always a good idea to keep extra funds in saving just for this reason so you can still pay your bills while you wait to get paid later.(If not then you are going to have to get a 2nd job to make up the money till your big payday comes)

If this keeps up for long, I'll look for another job. As it stands now, I have a PT job I work once or twice a month, but it's a bitch to get hours with. Unfortunately I spent most of last year unemployed so my savings are non existent. But it could be worse.. I could be waiting to get impeached ;)

Dude, I'm telling you, the Mexicans are going to pay for that wall **AND** all your back pay.

In the meantime, have you checked out this job?
