As the name suggests, I figured it would be fun to talk about uses for the Prowler be they conventional or not. For my part I was thinking about the Prowler's primary missions and then started to think about components. After that, I then brainstormed some uses for it. This is what I have thus far and let me know what you think.

Prowler Primary Use:

Named after the UPE military designation, the Prowler is a modernized version of the infamous Tevarin boarding craft from the First Tevarin War. With the recent discovery of the lost Tevarin planet in Kabal System, Esperia’s engineers were given unmitigated access to examine the preserved ships found in several of the caches, before meticulously recreating the design choices. The Prowler’s effectiveness as a rapid personnel deployment vehicle was mainly due to its silence. The boarding was constructed using a variety of techniques to minimize its signatures and get close to unsuspecting vessels before quickly deploying their boarders via EVA. With the updated Prowler model, you will find the perfect fusion of two cultures: the elegance and effectiveness of the Tevarin war machine combined with the reliability of modern UEE technology. (While lacking some of the upgrades of the modern version, vintage Tevarin-built Prowlers restored for modern spaceflight are prized by owners lucky enough to locate them.)

My thoughts:

So the Prowler is supposed to sneak up on ships (to within EVA range) and drop boarders (EVA only) to capture / disable other ships. I was honestly hoping for something that would attach itself to other ships and cut a hole in the hull but I could see how that would be problematic from a game design perspective. Regardless it is still a very focused use ship. Obviously, it's not going to be fast, armored, or have extensive weaponry. Which me to my next part, components.

Prowler Component Theorycraft:

The hull itself I imagine to be something like a cross between a B-2A Stealth Bomber and a F-117 Stealth Fighter. The Bombers hull is very curvy with a few angled points compared to the F-117 which seems to be a bunch of trianangles and parallelograms attached to each other that somehow form an aircraft. Ben said on a recent Bensday with Batgirl in regards to it fitting inside a Polaris that the problem would be the width not the length. This lends me to believe something akin to the B-2. The F-117 is thrown in there because of all the angles, it reminds me of Egyptian Architecture, namely the pyramids. Overall, I think it will be something like Freelancer / Constellation in size for carrying a Pilot, Co-pilot/Sensor Operator, and 1-12 boarders.

Engines: Not fast or flashy but incredibly efficient and quiet. Very little thermal signature at higher power levels and virtually none at lower.

Shields: Very weak. Basically, these are for emergencies when you are accidentally visually spotted during approach to a target spacecraft. Shields put off a lot of EM signature so I would imagine that turning these off before approach is a must.

Powerplant: Small for its size. It only really needs to power engines, sensors/avionics, and small shields/weapons for emergencies.

Sensors: I would expect it to have mediocre Active Sensors but some of the best Passive Sensors. Passive means quiet. Using Active Sensors could give up your position. I imagine this to pick up ships from long range with very little detail and as the Prowler approaches, altering course all the while to intercept as it listens. The closer it gets, the more information the Prowler can passively ID.

Weapons: 2 turrets with 2x S2 guns each is what I believe this ship should have for defense at maximum. I'm really hoping it has no weaponry as this would suck up much needed power from engines and sensors.

Obvious Uses:

Boarding / Infiltration of target spaceraft. Kill or capture everyone on board or maybe sneak into and disable an unsuspecting Polaris / Idris / Javelin. Need fuel? Target a Starfarer and set EMP charges on its powerplant and just as you assault the flight deck, the powerplant is fried leaving no escape for the crew.

Not so obvious uses:

Burglary. Imagine sneaking down onto a planet where an enemy org base awaits. They have something you want but it isn't worth a major engagement. Send a Prowler with a small team to infiltrate their base, grab the loot, and bug out before anyone can suspect a thing. This kind of gameplay could be really fun.

Well those are some of my ideas. Would love to hear what you think.

No Money, No Problemswler.

My dream would be that it carries a minimum of 10 boarding crew, max 20 with an eva system that ejects them from the ship en-mass while it is still moving without them having to do anything. I had a thought of a cylindrical airlock so their seats are in a row set in to a long cylinder. It then simply rotates to keep the air inside the ship while putting the troops on the outside with a minimum of fuss or wasted time. Two of those, one either side of the ship, yeah the troops would be upside down compared to the ship once rotated but they are EVAing in space everything is upside down. Only problem would be lost limbs if they get trapped in the cylinder.

Either the above or the ship will almost be an intricate scaffolding affair with minimal sized pod-like structures containing the main components of the ship, but spread out and attached to each other by poles so the Scanner cross section would be a few little things rather than one big thing, the drop troops in nothing more than bus-shelters contained in the mass of poles. Think of the first time you stumbled across GrimHex and realised it wasn't one of the big asteroids, but lots of little ones held together by wires... Too cool...

My suspicion is that the engines will be heavily ducted to hide IR signature, and protect the troops you've just slung out the back. No point dumping out 10 EVA dudes if you fry 7 of them pulling away from the drop point...

Based on the one picture we have seen of Tevarin tech (the picture of 'talis firing their torpedos at a distant Tevarin lightening spewing tower-thing) I expect heir ships to be a lot of loose angular panels that make up the hull as whole.

I don't expect it to have many weapons, and s2 max, but i do expect it to have an above average turn of speed for its size and for that stealth to work as advertised (but i do accept its an older design and the Tevarin lost the war because the Prowler was not so incredible that it was capable of single handedly winning it for them). Also shield capable but armour lacking.

That is my theory, we will wait and see...

I doubt I will be picking up a Prowler. If I do, it will only be by melting other ships I have lying around.
So little to go on as far as what the ship will be like, but I will theorycraft anyway.
I would think, if it's going to be as sneaky as it claims (getting close enough to ships to EVA without them realizing), it's not only going to need bare bones components but also be very small so the cross section doesn't give it away.
Even if it's target is not distracted by other threats, the target will likely not be stationary. So the Prowler will have to be significantly faster and able to overtake it's smallest possible target (Connie? Lancer?). If that target ship is in combat with some other target, the Prowler and it's pilot would have to be ridiculously maneuverable just to keep from a collision, much less to go unnoticed by pilot or turret gunners. So maybe it will have a way to disable like an EMP like Avenger, but I haven't heard this is the case. Maybe the boarding plan will be to just drop troops as quick as possible, then the pilot bugs out.

(I got to do this once when I was in the Army. Once was enough for me, I'm no acrobat! :p)

So I'd expect next to no firepower, no cargo, no beds or amenities, and a big alien engine that somehow runs quiet. I know there was some scuttlebutt about it being a big ship, but larger than a fighter and there would be the cross section problem. Any bigger and it would be more of a dropship like the Redeemer rather than a dedicated boarder. Probably only big enough to carry 4 boarders, the smallest team planned for Star Marine. Any operation to board a ship Polaris size or larger would likely require a group of Prowlers acting together. Just speculation on my part, but I would like to see boarders have tractor beam pistols so they can Spider-Man their way around.
I'd bet on a price around $200 if not more, just for the alien novelty. I would need some convincing to buy one myself (maybe it will come in black and yellow ;)).

Make that two. Neither am not interested; if only for CCU it later and/or having in buyback. But for military purposes it could be a key vehicle. TEST should have one for boarding pubs in closed formation.

I have no interest in purchasing this ship. Mainly because this role should be covered by the caterpillar (at least so they said once even though they have also said they have dropped the person catepults boo!).

Stealthy and fast do not go together generally so I would be surprised if its fast. There is a boarding ship already the Vanduul one and that looks like a big leech which clamps on. To actually function as a boarder rather than just troop transport drop ship it must have some way to get in. Given the use of old tech preference in star citizen, the harpoon with an large explosive "tip" to blow a hole might work. Otherwise glorious mining laser equivalent to burn way in. If the game is to raid a ship after it is disabled why would the ship be stealthy?

This ship in concept seems designed for special ops and therefore probably has limited use, we shall see. (Pirating not withstanding,)

As I personally found with the Polaris never under estimate RSI' ability to sell pixel ships you do not need, that are way to expensive! I also presume the Polaris was deliberately placed before the November ship sales so as not to reduce people buying packages that are otherwise not available. That being said the latest specialist ship prices have been creeping up in price i.e. Prospector and Terrapin so I would be surprised if it was less than $150 bucks given we already know its alien and to large for the Polaris hanger. If it has a real alien look tag this will be much higher.

@Crymsan Please accept my apologies for saying this, but this discussion is out of date before you tried starting it. CIG aka Ben has clearly stated - not long ago - that they will continously go on with creating new ships and doing concept sales because this secures them a steady income. So, yes, it can happen that you pledged on a ship which will already be outdated and/or only "one more of its kind" by the time SC will be released. But honestly, who cares? The diversity makes the fun imho. ;)

I do not care how many ships can do it, since I have an LTI Caterpillar in the hanger I do not personally need another ship to do that role.

Here's how I imagine the use of the prowler to be:
You and your friends pull up to a wrecked and floating Reclaimer in your Polaris. You were brought there by a distress beacon that promised a hefty reward for recovery. After a minute or so of trying to hail the crew and scanning the area for their escape pods, you strangely find nothing. That's when the breach alarms start ringing out in your own ship. 3 prowlers had been floating among the wreckage and were now attached to your Polaris. Before you have much time to mount a defense, the enemy boarding team has already killed most of your NPC crew. You decide to lock the bridge to keep you and your remaining crew safe. That is until the enemy boarding team breaks through and uses your skull as the hood ornament on their brand new Polaris.

i voted maybe, depending on the 2.6 release or not, if there is a decided lack of info, or all we get is another homestead video, then probably not, i personally am getting tierd of hearing soon

In the recent Bensday interview with Catgirl Episode 65, Ben pointed out what I have seen being developed by CIG. Starter multi-role ships moving towards bigger more expensive dedicated single role/purpose ships. He highlighted the fact that the current boarding/drop ships were

Hoplite, Redeemer, Prowler, Retaliator (coming with a Titan modualrity for that armor) and that the Reedemer and Prowler were the more dedicated versions meant for mainly its intended purpose with limited multifuntionality use such as cargo hauling. (Remember that cargo hauling requires special grounded areas to prevent cargo from getting tossed around the ship. Hoplite was referred to as more multifunctional since they could be outfitted and was first and foremost a vanguard (guess he meant more of a fighter).

So the Prowler is a dedicated boarding ship. If it comes as turreted as a reedemer then it could also serve as a dropship supporting troops as they deploy.
