My vote is for Hair-Banger!

Although Anal-Drama can be fun too (but I'll spare you the gif).

Hair-Banger is still the only ship in it's particular role. I bet there will be situations where it will be the best boat for the job.
Also, it will be somewhat unique. Anal-Drama I would expect to be more common and less expensive to get later with in-game earnings.

The Harbinger is the Bomber version, with BUKs you can convert it to Sentinel, electronic warfare or Warden, long range fighter but no option for cargo, 1 / 2 person, pure fighting.
The Andromeda is a multi functional ship, can be used for medium cargo, missile boat, exploration, whatever but it needs a crew.

I would choose the Harbinger, I also would get the BUKs, but that is because I'm more into fighting, I don't want to rely on a crew so I can take my ship out for a flight. It really depends on what you intend to do with it in game.

Another consideration of course is, why do you want a ship before game starts? A bought ship preferably has LTI for what it is worth. When a ship has LTI, it won't cost you any insurance, you still must wait until it is repaired. What kind of ship has a higher risk of needing insurance? A fighter which maybe can't earn fast bucks or a versatile ship which can earn enough money itself to pay for its insurance?

Marc raises some very valid points here.

Wow! Awesome response! As for game play, I have no idea yet. First, I fucked up. I meant Aquila, not andromeda. I want to explore, but how long will that really last before I'm all like, been there, done that. (Thanks Elite Dangerous) I'm in love with the idea of CAS/Drop ship/QRF, but the harbinger isn't much suited for any of those. I originally wanted the Harbinger as a long range fighter, with the intention of kitting it out as an explorer as time went on, then got the Dur, so not necessary. The Aquila is already an explorer+ has a high-speed dune buggy + has a snub nose fighter, so really more bang for the buck; however, just like in real life- I'm restricted by the warp-hole size I can fit it in. Also I'd have to buy a slav...er- NPC or two to crew it effectively. I don't know. I guess I'll just keep the hair-banger (effectionatly named "Garth") until something more compelling changes.

Then you should have bought the Warden, the Warden is a long range fighter with beds and long term life support.

For exploration, you'll want a land vehicle. A dragonfly will do better if its just you but a rover will be better if you have friends.

I'll be exploring th my Caterpillar. I don't need scanners to collect data to sell. I just need a ship that can carry me and my crap to a cool place so I can pillage... err... explore the area. :)

Got the Cat as a possible explorer too, but now thinking of bumping it up. Got it when it was $245, now it's up to $295 value as a CCU. Carrack or Reclaimer tempting me lately.

Valid points? I thought we just needed the harbinger because it was awesome. No valudation needed.
True story.

Sentinel has the looks
I'd rather have the Harbinger and a Sentinel BUK

This is what I have.
The Warden with a Sentinel BUK and a Harbinger BUK. The Warden can't bet left out, but it never had a LTI BUK.
I wish. But the way my system worked out, it was the Harbinger I bought. Upgraded from an Aquila in the mega explorers pack. I did manage to get both the other BUKs with 2 and 3 Year insurance, respectively. That's good enough for me.

I too shall be using my Pirate 'Pillar for "exploration". ;)

These are wise men. Listen to everyone who loves the Vanguard, for we rule.

As for game play, I have no idea yet.
If you want to sometimes explore, but most times kick ass, then buy a Vanguard and crew a Carrack. It costs nothing to crew and the Carrack will do a much better job at exploration than anything else. There are lots of folks here who own Carrack and would love to have committed crew. Same with the Polaris, the StarG, the Reclaimer, etc. Save your money for NPCs and kick-ass weapons. Anyone who owns a big ship is going to have a rude awakening, the first time they fly it alone and have it taken away from them. No one should ever fly money making ships like Connies, outside UEE space without fighter escort, and even inside UEE space, there are pirates who want yo take what you have.

All of the Vanguard are excellent fighter escorts for they are the only long range fighter. You will be able to earn good money with any of them, and you will make connections to folk who own ships like the Carrack.

The Vanguard are the backbone of Squadron 42 for a reason, and given you can swap out battlefield upgrade kits and own a Warden, Harbinger and Sentinel as one ship with LTI, that is a great purchase.

I love the Vanguard, but honestly if I had to choose between the two, I would definitely want the Aquila. Much more bang for your ship. work for the harbinger in game once you feel you need that much firepower.
