I came here with an open mind. I googled for Derek Smart, dug out that he was a game developer. He's better known for his SC controversy than for any of his games, and that says a lot. So I went on to check out his games.
Now I know why he's so bitter. His games probably ended up in G2A sales, bundled with 20 other games for $0.99. His dreams of becoming a successful game developer crushed by the new school of developers and gamers.
Chris Roberts managed to sell a dream and now is working his ass off to make it a reality.
Let's talk about the year 2014. SC was already in development. 2014 is also the year that Elite: Dangerous, Dark Souls 2, Dragon Age Inquisition, Hearthstone, Watch Dogs and CoD: Advanced Warfare came out (to name a few).

If only it was 16 years, we just passed the 21st anniversary of when Take Two released (and officially lit the dumpster fire) Battlecruiser 3000AD and it was in development for 7 or 8 years at that point. He's been failing at being a game developer for the better part of 30 years. iirc his only other real game accomplishment is Alganon which was such a shameless WoW clone the lead developer said "People want a familiar UI". I didn't realize "familiar ui = directly ported and ripped off models and graphics.
Now that I'm thinking about it, it really couldn't be more perfect. If I'm looking into purchasing an unfamiliar game (or any product), I look first at the reviews. I get a general overview of the quality and the community sentiment. Then, I look into the worst case scenarios. If it's reviews, I look at the 1 star reviews. If it's something like a video game, I look into the dominant source of drama. If the main source of dissatisfaction is something I can live with, the purchase proceeds.
Enter Derek Smart. If I were to start this "vetting" process now for Star Citizen, I wouldn't find much for rated reviews. So, I would look at the biggest sources of drama for the game. I would find the usual salt from people who don't understand development, but inevitably I would end up looking at Mr. Smart and his comments.
At that point, I would only need to dig for a few minutes. As soon as I saw Derek's joke of a game, I would immediately disregard every single word that came out of his mouth or was typed out on the internet. No person can release junk like that and be a qualified voice. I would likely purchase the game immediately after. If THAT is the biggest voice against SC, than it couldn't possibly be that bad. Honestly, that's usually where the bar sits in today's game development. I no longer search for a "good" game. I'd be searching forever. I will settle for "not that bad". Of course SC is way above that bar at the moment.
Then again, all this would have been applicable before the last couple weeks. Now that the SQ 42 vertical slice is out along with 3.0, no other evidence is needed. Almost every single one of my real life friends that had jumped on the scam bandwagon have completely changed their mind after seeing those. I suspect most of the doubters have or will feel the same once they see it. I can only imagine how many people have contacted SC customer service trying to undue their previous rebates...

Derek bragged about doxxing people on his twitter and blog. Among them the Chris and Sandi Roberts Kids.
There are legal docs from Ortwin and Derek. All of which Derek has made public via his blog.
Keep in mind that when CIG investigated further found that Derek gave a non-existent address.
Mandalore gaming commented on this as well saying he should probably not doxx employees or their kids.

In my humble opinion, I feel that it is only fair to do until others as they would do unto you. You know, "The Golden Rule". In the case of DS, should he go around legitimately doxxing people online, then he should have all of his own personal info listed online in various places where his enemies might easily find them.
This being said, I would apply the Golden Rule to you wonderful TESTies by getting you periodic drink refills & helping you get to a space bed as safely as possible so that you don't get stranded somewhere without a means of getting home to cause more chaos when you are sober enough to activate your ships that are possibly parked upside down. Just don't blame me if there are always markers around for people to draw penises on passed out faces.
