Hello friends,

Star citizen seems to offer alot of things and one of them should be the fact that you can play without actualy owning a ship or whatever can fly.
The frist thing that comes to my mind is that you can be a crew member but i would like you ear what you all think of what you want your playtime on SC be.

Are you going to be a combat only pilot, a space truck driver , an explorator of a prospector?

Or do you want to be an engineer, a marines or somehting that dont have to rely on piloting?

I m curious

Well since the cult only has the one role currently, (well you can sit in a turret and miss) it seems a bit early to say. Given most people will fly single person ships though I doubt it will go out of fashion.

... kind of all of the above. I have several single player ships, but I also have several multi-crew ships. My intent is to spend time being a pilot of my own ships, but also helping other players by filling other roles. That might also serve to help me find live, interactive and friendly partners to help me fly my own multi-crew ships.

I suspect that you will probably be able to live in the PU without having to fly anything. There will be transportation that can take you places.

In Squadron 42 however, there will be combat missions that you HAVE to fly.

How important is flying to me?

I think the game is visually beautiful and flying around space and the surface is everything I wanted it to be.

As for combat, in its current form, I am not the biggest fan. I am waiting to see what the final version of the flight model is and we will see from there.

I just plan to herd space cats.

In all seriousness, I think there will be much more support players than pilots. While the key part of a combat fleet are going to be fighters and AWACs due to the threat stealth bombers have on capships, the people maning the radar systems, guns, engineering, all that will probably be more proficient at those than flying. It's the same way with industry. There is plenty to do besides flying. Like, I can't fly for shit but the bar on my 890 Jump will be well stocked for those who can.

Agreed. Plus, I'm getting old so my reflexes will never compare to the kids.

Lucky for me, with old age has come some RL UEC that I've converted into capital ships. Thus I'm far more likely to be commanding those and letting people who are faster on the draw than I am do the piloting and shooting.

Well, piloting itself for me is more along the lines of "can I get from point A to point B without crashing into a planet or leaving a trail of destruction trying to land" type of situation. I'm really not that bad but if I got into a dogfight I think I'd get wrecked pretty quickly. I'm pretty confident that all I really need is practice to get better. It only took an hour or two to get from the "OH SHIT! OH SHIT! OH SHIT!" skill level to "OK I think I got this." skill level.

As for combat, I'm less optimistic about my chances where that is concerned. My attempts at arena commander never really showed that much improvement even after almost a week of practice. So it looks like I'll be sticking to space trucker, prospecting (if I ever get a chance to try it out) and salvaging when solo and trying to jump on someone's capital ship when grouping is in the horizon.

I joined for ship-to-ship and fleet combat in space

not running and jumping and shooting friggin' rifles

but hey, it's a big universe now

can you make a game that is all things to all people in any finite amount of time?

I dunno, but CIG is sure trying

I sense a disturbance in the project creep.

Its why this game is still years from going to beta.

As to the OP question. I plan on spending a majority either being the pilot of a small craft or the Captain of a larger craft. But there is definitely the desire to go on away missions for some boots on the ground combat, speeding across the ground on a Nox or smashing in the front door of a base with a Tonk and moping up on foot.

Or leading a boarding party to commandeer a Bengal or Driller.

Space Uber. Spuber... or Ubuce.

i decided my best course of action would first to become proficient in combat, earning space pesos along the way, the “retiring” as an explorer. That way I can whore myself out as security to satisfy my pewpew.

I love piloting but I am just as excited about a half dozen other game dynamics. Without piloting none of them would be so exciting, so it's certainly a necessary function, but I can be just as happy in the second seat of a Sentinel as I am in the first.

I thinik it's important to distinguish between piloting, and combat piloting, and dogfighting. These three are all separate categories (although each is a subset of the previous), and given the broadest definition, I doubt many will find they are fully actualized, in game without piloting.

Certainly though, anyone can find the fun in roles that aren't piloting. There will be big cash monies available to specialists in sensor use, turret use, etc.

It's kind of like driving in RL. If you don't, you're dependent on public transit or someone else, which limits your freedom of movement opportunities somewhat... but taking the bus alone won't kill you, and you're still able to get to work. It'll be kind of the same in SC.

Piloting isn't necessarily an occupation, but combat and dog-fighting will be specialized. But many occupations are going to depend on your ability to fly, land, and operate a small ship. Also it'll kind of sort of suck a little if you like playing as, say a construction engineer on a Pioneer, and your favorite Pioneer pilots keep playing other ships.
