I thought the writing was good. I have no idea how the English translation compares to the original Polish.

I thought the story was really good up until the end, and then I felt kinda cheated. I thought the story was good on its own, and there was no reason to intersect it with another story, Don't want to give away too much, but I thought the end cheapened the whole effort, but that it was pretty good up until then. Then, the bottom just dropped out. I was going to read it again later, to see if I'm just over reacting.
Maybe it is better in the original but after reading the whole series it just felt like a waste of time for me. Maybe I just didn't enjoy that authors style. Heck I would even recommend it as an excellent piece of fantasy for those interested in foreign works, it just wasn't my thing. I would rather stick with Sanderson or Rothfuss when it comes to that I guess.

If you have a bunch of people interested in audio books you might choose something people can get at the local library. Every time I go in there Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series calls to me. Been wanting to read that for years, but who has time for 14 volumes?

So what will our first book be!? I vote for a starship based book with high reviews. Or should we start with Fantasy like The Hobbit?

@SeungRyul we need a daily poll for which book to start with.

my vote is for the expanse ( in order 1 - Drive, 2- churn an expanse novella, 3 - butcher of anderson station, 4 - leviathan wars, 5 - Caliban's War, 6 - gods of risk, 7 - Strange Dogs, 7 - abaddon's gate, 8 - Vital Abyss, 9 - Cibola Birn, 10 - nemesis games, 11 - babylon's ahes, 12 - persepolis rising)
A few of those are more less short stories, and i believe this is the correct order to date for the series.

I think we should only be able to put in 1 nominee, not 12. :P No seriously, although it may be a great series, we should start with a single book (probably not in a series) and see how the "book club" does with just the first one. I will take note of the Expanse 1-Drive as your nominee though.

This as actually "next" on my reading list...I always meant to play the game, picked it up a month ago on GOG's summer sale. Played the game for about an hour, LOVED IT, went online to find out more about it and saw the games were based on a book! I immediately ordered the book...haven't played the game since, but, I'm stoked to read the book. I've heard the translation is a little ragged.

I'd like to put forward "Across Realtime" by Vernor Vinge.

Its a duo of "The Peace War" and "Marooned In Realtime", I think it's a good read with some pretty excellent concepts not many people may have experienced before.

It's on my list anyway, though I wish I had one with this cover.

Anyone have recommendations as far as Kindles or Tablets for e-books? I never jumped on the bandwagon, but now my bookshelves are overflowing with books I haven't read!

I use my $50 Amazon Fire 8" tablet for an ebook reader. Bigger screen than a Kindle, but needs more frequent recharges.

which I do anyway because all the apps that used to clutter up my phone live there

I'm using it now in fact

I actually found the book excellent, which rather surprised me. I preferred it over the games.

As far as my nomination goes, allow me to put forward 'The Player of Games', by Iain M. Banks. It's actually the second book in the Culture series, but i find it by far the best one, and it's a pretty decent introduction to the series as well.

IMO, if you just want to read, a Kindle, esp. a Kindle "white" or whatever they call it, is the best. It is lightweight, thin, & lasts a long time on a charge.

If you want to browse the web and/or do email, then getting a full-fledged tablet is probably better. Tablets are usually heavier and don't last as long on a charge, but do have color! I have an iPad and use the Kindle app on that...it is heavy compared to a Kindle, but I mainly leave it in the house and/or read in bed.

FYI, for $0.99 you can get the complete collection of Robert E. Howard's Conan series on your Kindle device...I think I'm reading through this now for the 3rd time, when I get to the end, I just start over again. I don't know why, but it is extremely satisfying to read about all the bad guys dying, usually by Conan's sword cleaving through their skulls all the way down to their breast bones, with their brains spilling out...

Does it include the lamentations of their women? Without lamentations, cleaving skulls is just another day on the wheel of pain.

So what are you actually getting with ebooks and kindles? Is the book a file I can back up on a hard drive? Can the reader open other files like pdf's? Do I need to worry about memory or ram or any other compooter wizerdry?

Every time I have to shop for gadgets, I envy the life of a barbarian...
