I’m really interested in how it runs on your 970, and what games / apps there are for kids. Do I need to upgrade from the 1060 in my machine, and is there good content for younger people?

This is not related to a commercial product. I have experienced what happens under 90 FPS during a medical device test last year. To call it vertigo would be a bit of an understatement. I think it dropped to around 50 FPS, which you'd hardly notice with a PC monitor. It disoriented me completely in seconds.

It asks you if you want to log in / create an Oculus account with facebook or an email account. Thats the only facebook connection I have seen so far.

What's the account used for? Does it store settings to sinc and import to other devices?

Since the Quest has no input device and does not rely on a PC, your phone does everything.

You download the Oculus app, you set up the wifi through it and access the store to buy apps and games.
