So when this first started, like in the first couple days the news about the virus broke, I said "that's it, it's impossible to contain this" just because of what I was seeing and how contagious this virus was. I had absolutely no hope of things just clearing up until a mass worldwide distribution of a vaccine (which I don't expect anytime this year or next, maybe longer if at all).

Entertaining the idea that all 11 million residents in wuhan are to be tested is exactly what I wanted to hear to have some sort of optimism. Like seriously, our data is shit, its unreliable, its incomplete, its new, and we only have a sliver of the whole picture. We have enough data to make well educated guesses, even more so as time goes on, but if you don't have data on the entire picture, you're at a crippling disadvantage. The perfect scenario would be everyone, everywhere gets tested every single day with a 100% accurate test. That's absurd though and not feasible. Hopefully as time progresses someone smart will come up with a solution we just can't see. Social distancing and good hygiene practices really are our best hope at this point in time.

I hope this is a nothingburger, otherwise this doesn't look good at all.
Social distancing, good hygiene, masks in public were the only true solution starting back in Jan. The other aspect would be to realize this virus was going to kill people which sucks but there was no stopping it. It's far too contagious and people are far too incapable of maintaining good hygiene and wearing a mask correctly. So the world panicked and enacted a shutdown which once again people showed they are going to do what they want. This all goes back to you can't protect everyone and you cannot stop people from making poor choices. It does suck that some will be collateral damage but once again you can't save everyone. After all, we live every day with deaths caused by other peoples poor choices and accidents not even initiated by the person who ends up paying for it with their life.

Instead of simply weeping for the loved ones lost we panicked and made things far worse and now we face a future that will have much more pain for years to come. The most tragic part is the realization that the attempts to flatten the curve, to give the medical profession a fighting chance to save lives looks to be for not. The percent number dead in Italy which did have its medical services overwhelmed looks to be similar to New York which did not.

Wuhan which went into a lockdown not easily achievable elsewhere is already showing signs of a resurgence of the virus which is to be expected. This virus being as highly contagious combined with its long incubation period is going to be around for years to come. Even after a vaccine is crafted new strains will pop up from time to time.

I have this gut feeling that the pandemic job losses will be far higher than 42% of the current layoffs. I wouldn't be surprised if by this winter we are looking at a job loss upwards of 45%

Todays status update is bought yo you by the UK extending the worker retention scheme for another 4 months. Of all the things that have (and have not) been done, this continues to be a tremendous move. If people don't have to worry about their livelihoods, they are much, much less likely to break the advice and requirement to stay home and isolate. Furlough 'aint no holiday but neither is not having a job.


Today's status outlook is bought to you by President Trump reportedly walking out of a reporters conference after a nasty question. The reason why it's an outlook is after the pandemic, there will be nasty questions. A lot of them. Although some will be about china, many more will be about the domestic response. The questions to china will be valid - but so will the domestic questions.


I feel a bit sorry for Mr. Trump. He was so close to a compassionate answer but then went back to the China thing... The answer to that question (there are never really any "right" answers to questions like "why do you think", only answers that convey the right message) was probably along the lines of:
"The virus is killing in the US, but it is also killing all over the world and the global battle continues day by day, hour by hour. At a time of such unprecedented suffering and loss, It's difficult to see hope or feel positive in the face of such adversity and there are hundreds of thousands of Americans who have not even been in contact with the virus but who are in intolerable mental anguish. To be able to put our work in context and not only say we are doing all we can, but also show that we are world leaders in taking the fight to the Corona Virus, is why sometimes we compare to other countries who are also doing all they can. It is not only saying 'Have Hope', it is showing we are taking the fight to the front lines exactly where it is needed. I can't think of any other ways to put the huge amount of work our health professionals have done and are doing in such a short amount of time in context for Americans who may be suffering mentally right now, other than comparing to other countries who have been battling as long if not longer. If you know of one please speak to one of my aides."

btw, I was able to answer my own question:

Backing that assessment was a report out last week by credit rating agency Moody’s, which looked at a range of pandemic scenarios — from mild to severe — and concluded “U.S. health insurers will nonetheless remain profitable under the most likely scenarios.”

Earlier this month, UnitedHealth Group CEO David Wichmann told analysts that cost reductions so far are outstripping expenses for COVID-19 and that revenue is up compared with the previous year. He expects — barring a worsening situation — the rest of the year’s earnings to match projections. Other insurers, including Centene, Anthem, Humana and Cigna, are scheduled to release earnings reports this week.

Interestingly, when driving plummeted, the auto insurance companies made a big deal of reducing premiums/returning money back to policy holders. So, far, I haven't heard anything like that from health insurance companies.
Honestly, I am surprised the auto insurance industry is reducing/returning money. As for health insurance while people are driving less they are not eating any healthier or living healthier lives.

Yeah, im on the side of the reporting being ridiculous, ask stupid questions get stupid answers. She then takes personal offense as if hes being racist towards her. Uhm, what? It goes on to say in the article you linked above that she was previously also the victim of racist attacks from a whitehouse staffer for calling the coronavirus the kung flu, another stupid question to ask the president. I remember the question and I also remember them not being able to name who it was, almost like they were pulling it out of their ass. I can't tell you how many headlines a week I see on the sidebars of news media that say "Trump lashes out". That's always the narrative. Trump temper tantrum, trump lashes out, trump is scared, trump is weak, trump is a racist. Then you look at these videos and youre like holy shit, no wonder he hates the press, because the reporters keep asking dumb ass questions and theres no substance to them. Then you call on another reporter, theyre not ready so he moves on. Then they take it personal when they didn't have their shit together. Its just a shit show, that's not journalism. I addressed my frustrations with this earlier if you remember.

The one headline said that she was "screaming." I didn't see or hear her scream on the video I posted. Could you point out where she was screaming?

Very sad news from one of our own members, O-Lefty lost his grandmother today to COVID-19.

She lived in Gunnison, CO, assisted living homes, which are getting hit hard.

Our condolences.

Lefty reminded us all to call out parents and grandparents as much as possible.

This is very sad, and I can't agree with his sentiments more...reach out to your parents and grandparents...this is a hard time, and it is likely going to get worse before it gets better.

FYI, by current measures, *ONE-THIRD* of COVID-19 deaths (that we know of) are either nursing home/care home residents *or* staff at these facilities.
