I saw that video suggested to me, but didn't watch yet. Just from the thumbnail my immediate thought was, "Why is the camera so damned close to her face?" Is that why NPC facial expressions are sometimes fucked?
No. Animations are fucked up cos the character rig in the game messes up, cos they messed up translating the animation from the capture to the rig or just the rig itself has some errors in it (skin weights, limits and whatnot)...
The camera is so close so:
- it can be as small as possible yet still pickup loads of details and track properly
- the actor has to deal with a smaller rig. The larger the heavier the more tiresome to wear, and just so they don't bang constantly into other actors and props and shit
- it captures almost only the face, not much around it, so there is less "junk" in the image it tries to track
