Should Star Citizen consider NFT's for raising funds?

I'm watching the video right now. My first reaction to Star Citizen and NFT's is that I will sell my account if I can and never look back. I need to do more research before I come around to it. Were here to fund the project with pledges. It's worked up until now, why would they change? Is this going to be the thing with star citizen, people just trying to trade ships around just for a profit? I know it happens on the grey market, but how would it benefit the SC community as a whole? Maybe im old and disgruntled, I don't like it.

At it's core, NFTs are an admirable addition. Having actual ownership of something you bought digitally is great.
My problem is ... you know DAYUMMMM well that's not why these companies want to do it. This is their way of turning microtransactions into macrotransactions.

"But .... but .... you "OWN" it so it's totally worth it."
Nahhhh dawg, not buying it.

That would remain the same. They sell a ship, you buy it, it funds the game.

The big difference is that the ship remains tradable between anybody, much like they are now, but without CIG being involved in any transaction beyond the very first one.

I almost see that as the Second Lifers who desperately want CIG to allow user driven content that is tradable and sellable in real life currency.

I just don't see it. With everything they have to worry about ... legal issues surrounding ownership and regulation for those kinds of things probably isn't something they want to tackle. Especially when you can just keep making jpegs bigger and selling them for double the cost as the original concept sale.

No, you dont get to create your own armor or ships. Only CIG makes those, so this is nothing like Second life.

How is this any different from your account holding an Idris? You bought a digital item, its pixels in your account.

CIG creating the assets doesn't change the fact that governments across the globe are putting pressure on legislation for microtransactions and crypto.
Unlike Ubisoft, CIG doesn't have the "F U money" to get a bunch of lawyers in a room and grease the wheels in the name of share holder profits.

My point is ... why would CIG start handing out NFTs when they can get people to pay hundreds of dollars for digital items that CIG owns, and thus ... controls? Ubisoft makes what CIG has crowd funded over 9 years in a single quarter. They can afford the bad press or negative consequences. People will still buy their games and a trip to congress or parlament is just another Tuesday.

CIG thinking about NFTs just seems like throwing more volatility on an already stressed project.

Dont get me wrong ....

If CIG came out and said, "Hey gang, to thank every last backer who made this possible ... we're actually going to make pledged ships have an individual NFT that you own forever" ... that would be awesome.

But the people pushing for gamer NFTs aren't doing it for that reason. It's just another microtransaction to them ... one that they can charge more for because it's "limited and numbered".

Even more "baseball card" loot boxing is ahead for gamers. That's what this is, IMHO. Cashing in on the crypto hype to charge more for your microtransactions.
"You pulled #2/500 Blue Skin, aren't you glad you spent $50 on that NFT loot crate?" mehhhhhhh

They dont hand out anything.

Imagine the next sale.. its a gold plated Aurora, only 100 will be sold, each at $1000.

That is a quick $100k CIG makes.

Now I own 1 of these rare ships, I can keep it, or I can sell it. No different from how things are right now.

The only difference is that this gold plated Aurora can be sold and re-sold indefinitely to anybody that wants it without CIG being involved in that sale.

The problem is ownership. That creates liability. Liability cost money.

If they modify the Aurora I own and spent $1,000 for ... that's destruction of private property.

However, you don't actually own an aurora. You have access to a digital asset they exchanged with you for your donation to Star Citizen's development.
Which is only a problem for CIG because we also have to pay sales taxes on that... which makes it something other than a donation. Not sure how that would hold up in a court.

But if they turned ships into NFTs... you WOULD own them.
And thus, any changes would have to be made individually to ships ... by permission only.

If I don't want my NFT Ares to get a weapons nerf ... you can't make me.
I bought what I bought and CIG no longer has any ownership or say in the matter.

I'm fine with NFTs and honestly it feels more like you own it at that point. would they make all items in the game NFTs though? If they did it could be pretty cool that you cold pretty much do anything you want with the digital item.

now on the onto the other side of the spectrum. If they did this before the official release of the game every single new site is going to shit all over them and they are going to get super bad publicity especially in the gaming community and get labeled money grubbers.

No difference from the CSGO Community Market on Steam, except NFTs dont need to trade on the Community Market.
NFT's do give Ubisoft the ability to collect a portion of the selling price when "ownership of the token" is transferred, and they can make more assets if they want to. Nothing exists that could stop them.

Or you own access to a digital item, which they can modify at any time.

There is nothing that says the thing you buy must remain 100% the same on their servers where it is used.

That's the only place it has any value ... literally what so ever.
The only place that ship will EVER work and have a value is ... IN Star Citizen.

They don't even have standard 3D models of the ships. It's all built on in-house tech ... models and all.

There is literally nothing we could do with a NFT of our ship outside of viewing and playing with it IN the engine that actually renders them. Star Citizen.
