Now that we have our first glimpse of the Fat Fury, it looks like 2xS5 and 8 missiles.

Damage output is not that great for a ship this size, so what special features should this have to make it worth the money? (besides asthetics)
From a glance ...

Star Wars Tie Interceptor

VS

Mirai Guardian (aka the Fat Fury)

There is a bit of a similarity & this version has 2x S5 weapons instead of 4x S3m which should definitely hit a bit harder. Given its size increase, here's hoping that it has a quantum drive, longer range & better shields. Some have speculated in the past that it'll have an internal area which might include a bed, but based on this I'm not thinking that's all that likely. I did love how they gave it the nod towards the classic TV show Airwolf featuring Jax & his fun crew.

Man, I still hum the Airwolf theme all the time!

From everything I've seen and heard so far I consider the Mirai Guardian a solo Vanguard.
Comparable armament, comparable shields.
I am pretty convinced it comes with a bed. If it got 1 SCU or comparable cargo space too we'd be lucky though.
I am also pretty sure it is jump capable because there seems to be a Quantum Interdiction variant that drops one of the wing mounted S5s for a QI device.
Kinda pointless to have a quantum disabled quantum disabler, dont you think so too?

Ahh, cool they've got some IAE vids again? These totally flew under my radar this year.
They're... umm, yeah. The first two (ep1, ep2) are an odd blend of almost funny trailers, blink-any-you-miss-it teases and each has quite a good interview with Rich Tyrer and John Crewe, plus a quickfire thing with Ben Curtis in ep1. They're worth a watch for those. The rest of the 'real' content, meh.

The premise that a spectrum satellite is recalibrating and showing snippets of adverts and other shows either side of the main 'show' is a weird creative choice, but okay. Being set in the 25th century that obviously looks like interference while a cathode-ray TV is being retuned to another channel.

I had hoped for more Jax McCleary micro-episodes. A couple of shortish clips is all we've seen so far and he doesn't speak. But there are new 'characters' in the Airwolf Spacewolf pastiche (Archimedes Stormwal?! Really?), so maybe there's hope.

There's a tiny glimpse of a MISC R.A.P.T.O.R. at the very end of ep2. I'm not the only one who would buy the hell out of that if the sales page (MISC Raptor - Roberts Space Industries | Follow the development of Star Citizen and Squadron 42) wasn't a Triggerfish gag. Aah well. One day.

I'm not so sure that is not capable of having a living space inside, look at the Prospector: while quite a small ship and while most of it is structural components (mineral sacks, engine, etc..) it still have an interior with components and even a combo bath-shower.
This think is based on the fury design language so engines won't be on the mail body, and that should free a lot of space so a small living quarter similar to the Prospector is not an impossible feature.

For the quirk to boost sells... well it looks really good IMHO, and 2x S5 on a ship that could turn put to be very agile is a very attractive combo (and the skin looks good too). Plus they use Airworlf motive that already make me look at the wallet...

BTW IAE video with Jax are always on the spot, max respect on the guys making them.

From what I have scraped together it has:
—2S5 stocks twin M7A laser cannons. Unlimited ammo, superb range, 3k dps. Excellent sniper w/ no reason to upgrade. Much lower power draw than 4S3 weapons, could be what enabled the 2S1 reactor build on this size bird. Attrition 5s offer a 25% increase in DPS, but require more power, which may not be a great trade off. Only experience can tell.
—4S3 x2 missiles, not for scrapping. S3 missile minimum lock range was knocked back from 1km to 1.5km a few weeks ago. Good to 25km. IIRC S3 missiles are seldom found on light and medium fighters. I think the Talon Shrike and Sabre Firebird are the only exceptions. This splits the difference between the Talon 2-missile salvoes and the Firebird 6 missile salvoes. Nice stand-off weapon in a quad pack can eliminate medium fighters with a single salvo. The Shrike can’t do this and the Firebird takes 2 seconds longer to launch, so this is an impressive missile platform. Almost an equal to the enviable Vanguard missile package in a ship with better long range guns. This is the purpose behind the design so if you don’t like missiles, don’t buy this ship. I would rather have had more S2 missiles but I think these are bespoke launchers.
—2S1 reactors means much less power needed and available than for the Vanguard.
—1S2 cooler is weird. Overcooled, smells like stealth. This is a standout we’ll come back to.
—1S2 shield is half the shield of a Vanguard, but sitting in a significantly smaller and probably more agile hit box. Not tanky, but not fragile. S2 allows the ballistics thwarting, power miserly Sukoran, if you can get your hands on one.
—1S2 Q Drive hints to long range
—1S2 scan makes this multi-mission capable. This is a big deal; bigger than most presume. Makes the S3 missile range much more useful than on the Shrike and Firebird.
—rumored to have a bed, head and galley
—rumored elevator cargo storage, to this point found in fighters only on the 300 series
—X geometry is usually amongst the most maneuverable. 1,200+ speed is better than the Vanguard.
—The missile launcher fairings look a little tanky to me, like they’re offering armor. Certainly they seem less fragile than true X wing and variable geometry found on the Scorpius and Vanguard. I’m betting good hull points here.

So, not especially special compared to the other heavy fighters EXCEPT for the oversized cooling and probably the worst view of any fighter. What does this mean?

I’m biased. I hope it means this is a stealth bird. Think a moment about putting an S2 cooler on a 2S1 reactor bird. Max cooling from twin Ultra-Flow S1 coolers is 880 cooling/second. Max cooling for a single S2 Snowpack cooler is 8,800 cooling/second. . .literally ten times as much as normal.

So my guess is stealth design. Especially considering it has elevator cargo storage, this looks like the step up from the 315P.

Ima guessing twin S1 reactors could have trouble powering an FR76 shield, so best choice for this could be a Sukoran, and you get ballistics coverage as a benefit. Also be aware, if ever there were a shield you wanted to power while sneaking, it’s the Sukoran. They generate extremely low EM when powered. Certainly, at the range these missiles have, you’d be tempted to leave a Sukoran on and not worry about shield power up time after a missile launch.

I don’t know any ships that can install 10X normal cooling for 2S1 reactors, so I am as always, hoping for a new stealth bird.

Why did they not give it a single S2 reactor? I can only presume they want you to be able to fly this on a single stealth reactor for minimum EM and power a military or industrial grade reactor when you need shields and weapons. The way to find out is fly it and see if a single stealth reactor provides enough power for full engine performance.

Also note the cargo elevator begs the question whether the tiny Mirai grav bike will fit. Probably depends upon ground clearance. The 300 series sits too low to drive a bike under them.

So is this really a fighter, or is it a Pathfinder?

I lean towards it having 'fighter' DNA by default.

What's the Pathfinder role in CIG's Star Citizen 1.0 vision sharing during Citizencon?

I’m not familiar with any new details of the Pathfinder role. I just think in general, Pathfinders like the 315P and Terrapin are low gunned so they’ll have a low signature. This seems to be that, but upscale from the others. Missiles enable low signature because launchers don’t require significant power nor emit. Note too the horrible view from the Turtle. Fighters need a good sight picture. So if you want to upscale a Pathfinder, you might build exactly this. Have to wait and see the emissions stats and range.

I don't know any of it's specs, since I haven't seen anything official from SC about its intended specs (as if that means anything anymore).

I do like how it looks. Reminds me of an oversized TIE Interceptor.

Aye, this IAE would have benefitted from the MIRIA Guardian, IMHO. The Intrepid was an opening shot at something 'new'. But everything that came after seemed 'older'. The Paladin felt like a Valkarie variant, the Medic was a clear Terrapin variant, and the Hornet MKII variants (while nice) were not dramatically new. The originality of the Guardian would have brought another breath of fresh air to the mix.

It's been confirmed that the Guardian is coming with the release of 4.0, so hopefully before the end of the year. It's currently in the PTU, so it's a LOT closer than 4.0 has ever been.
