I plan, preferably, to NOT lose ships. But the ones I have in mind are the Cutlass (assuming she gets upped to combat-worthy levels eventually; if not, maybe a Vanguard) and a Caterpillar. Possibly a second-hand Hornet or something if running with TEST and we just need guns.

Counter it a bit by making the NPCs fairly simple in function, but intelligent in the way they react to you. Need to Hire NPCs for protection? Sure thing! But they might get suspicious if you're hiring more than 3. "What could you possibly be protecting? How likely is this to get ugly?" Need...
