I like the concept of the Legionnaire, which is why I picked 1 up during the concept sale. Something about it's utility & features seem to be rather useful at times in the future, potentially speaking.

The biggest downside to the Legionaire is the size. It is every bit as large as a Cutlass Steel or Vanguard Hoplite. Since it is, for the most part, a one trick pony, that isn't something to endear it to me. Now if it was capable of fitting on an XS pad then it would be different.
How do you deploy the marines from an Idris? Using the Argo? Use the Idris as a dropship?
The Legionnaire is bigger than the Terrapin, but not so big as a Vanguard. Pad size really doesn’t help when you’re looking at big deck spaces like the Idris. I think the Idris will be able to squeeze Legionnaires a bit closer than folks might guess. Also, though I haven’t checked, I’m pretty sure the Legionnaire will fit the Polaris bay, and the Vanguard will not. So there may be big utility there.
There is a good vid on YouTube asking the question whether the Legionnaire isn’t a cleverly designed multi. There were some decent points made but the range issue went unexplored. If CIG tweeks range on release, there are a host of possibilities. Also the reactor signature. . .if it’s as low as we might expect from a thick hull ship, that would matter too. So don’t count it out. A pair of them can’t match the firepower or speed of the Prowler, but they may have other uses given lots of armor. It really depends most on just what the hacking suite is all about. That’s the unique feature they haven’t yet explained. What if like in ffg, you can tell another ship to power down engines, shields or reactor? There are a lot of ways CIG could go.

The Legionaire is taller, and at least as wide as both the Hoplite and the Steel. It is a couple meters shorter (nose to tail) but not significantly shorter.
If you can fit one on a pad, the others fit.

Looks like the Vanguard is about six meters longer and wider than the Legionnaire. So yeah, despite they call for the same landing pad size, that difference should be enough to fit the Legionnaire into the Polaris hanger, whereas the Vanguard will not fit.
If you’re willing to put just a single tender into the Polaris bay (which would not be my choice), the Legionnaire is a good fit. Just I would note CIG really should deliver more on this package. By way of comparison, the Swedish CB90 is shorter, one third the width, and Carrie’s 20 troops and cargo. That’s the best comparison vessel and it clearly shows a lack of functional density in the spacecraft.

It appears I missed a source. Everything on the Legionaire, except the Q&A, says it needs a Size S pad.
The Q&A says XS.
If the Q&A is correct and it doesn't grow during the Ship Pipeline, then it will fit in the Idris or Polaris. If it grows even a half meter in length or width, it doesn't fit on the pad. I should pull it into a modeler and verify, but I don't feel it's worth the effort.
It's looking pretty big to me, bigger than a vanguard and much fatter and taller (two storey interor?) I think you guys hoping to fit it in where smaller than vanguard ships fit are going to dissapoint yoursen

I agree, but the Q&A says it is supposed to fit the XS (Carrier Fighter) pads.
While this image makes it look a bit chonky, it wouldn't surprise me if a good chunk of the chonk is armor to help protect the boarding crew while preparing to dock by force.

The question isn't why it's chonky but how chonky it is. :)
I suppose until it's in the game to some degree where players can TEST it, we'll just have to wonder & theory craft.
I must like my ships a bit on the chonky side.
