Can someone explain how to employ stealth, and the limits of its usefulness?

Well said, and though I favor real world physics and what CIG is trying to accomplish, there are gameplay reasons for departing from these. Getting a reading of a ship's type and cargo is not possible with known conventional physics, but it sure makes for good gameplay.

BTW, they're again showing favoritism for group play with multiple ships working together. One ship pinging doesn't necessarily display anything about collaborators, so long as they know how to hide. A Razor can ping for a Polaris, and you would never know the Polaris is in the vicinity.

The best ops are going to be run by the best teams and crews, made up of cagey players who focus and know what they're about. Skill rules, not adolescent hours free of responsibility.

Agreed.. this is one of those areas where the needs for gameplay required something different.

This patch is HEAVILY focused on multiplayer ships and co-operation, although there is a long way to go.

@Raven_King Conceptually, nothing is different from what has been presented in this thread. In the details though, the backend systems has been completely reworked and ship 'balance' is basically starting all over again. There will be much hue and cry as the community learns the depth of the changes for this patch.

Bottom line is that Stealth is a thing you DO, not a thing you BUY. Some hulls have bespoke advantages, but others can outperform by careful selection and use of components. Everything has tradeoffs in this game.. jump in and help us find out what works for being sneaky now. :)

Yeah, but special hulls like the Space Turtle, have more coolers than conventional hulls. You can sneak in anything, but you can sneak in sneaky hulls much better than most.

Oh, okay - do you know of a reference for that? I thought that (in-universe) it was meant to be more a sort of image recognition concept - like a camera with some AI that recognised the shape of a target ship, like face recognition in real-world cameras.
EM is reading and locking on to a ship's electronic signature.
IR is reading and locking on to a ship's Thermal signature.
CS is locking on to a ship's shape. Without actively scanning a ship you would be limited to visual range, and to defeat it all the target would have to do was roll ship. It isn't impossible, but highly unlikely that it would be passive. And without actively tagging the target then the missile could get confused by any ship of that class.
