Can we talk about the fact that CIG is pedling a useless hardware to its player base

Heres the thing though. Your windows will boot up maybe 8 seconds faster, your game might load up 4 seconds faster but.....

once you are in there are no loading times as CR has stated its seamlessly transitions. So in conclusion a normal SSD at 1 TB will serve you better than a over priced flash drive.

Now don't get me wrong. If you are into media and need lower rendering times or play a lot of high single player games or something online that has load times, its worth it. Otherwise to the normal average Joes like us, its useless.

Speaking from personal experience, whenever I'm close to being "near full" after a good meal, my performance drops to a snails pace. Especially after a delicious Thanksgiving or Christmas feast with the family. #TryptophanComa LoL
Then you'd be like molassass in winter after my family's Thanksgiving/Christmas meal.

Before the Meal
Cheese and Cracker Tray, Olives (Black and Green) some Salami and Pepperoni as well

Start off:
Salads (Normal or Antipasto)
Soup (usually Escarole Soup)
Lasagna
Ravoli w/ Meatballs, Sausages, Pork Chops, Lamb Chops, Braciole)
Turkey with mashed Potatoes, Sweet Potatoes, Squash, Corn, Cranberry Sauce, Stuffing w/ more sausage, gravy, green bean casserole and a few other items.

Then you have your dessert:
Pies (Pumpkin, Apple, and Banana Cream), Cookies (Choc. Chip, Annisette, Pinwheels, and assorted Italian Cookies), Canole and other Italian style deserts.

Do agree right now at these prices and point, we don't need it. But if the rumors are true that Intel pretty much sponsored Citizencon and such, and all they wanted out of it was a pixel ship, I'm all for it. As many have pointed out in other threads, that's money CIG didn't have to spend on it.

Also, having a known player in computer market like Intel onboard is HUGE press. I really don't think Intel is gonna go attach name and prestige with something that is gonna be vaporware.

Dont get me wrong Im huge on the intel support for Star Citizen. Just pointing out that the biggest selling point is faster load times thats kinda pointless for Star citizen. Doesn't mean I'm not going to support intel by in future buying a I9 and a fancy mobo. After all Star Citizen is a core heavy game and promoting the flagship I9 chip would have made more sense than the drive.

True, but it's also faster transfer of textures and such. Even though loading screens wont be an issue, I can tell you transfering of textures from your disk to cache can take a bit. I RP some in SL and have it all set on my SSD and texture loading still takes a bit of time.

Don't underestimate this ^. This is a huge vote of confidence by Intel in Star Citizen, which for some reason, seems to have a flair up of negative press every now and again. This may also help CR negotiate some other deals, that can help us/CIG.

Again, the Anandtech review made it clear...this drive is better under some certain conditions, which may not be seen by us in our normal usage. If you want to spend your money on it, go ahead...if not, I don't think you are missing anything, or won't miss anything for at least the next 5 years or so, using a regular SSD.

Oh, I agree right now the price is not worth it. It really needs to come down in price a lot, and I'm talking $100-150 down in price before I would look to get it. But as I mentioned before, one huge benefit of the Optane over the 850 Evo or Pro is that it's the same performance whether the drive is near empty or near full.

Also, it appears when it goes to 4k Random R/W, the Optane is faster (330k vs 550k). Again, not worth the price. But since it is new tech, gonna be a bit more pricey.

TBH I think the issue here isn't whether the SSD is too expensive or not, but whether the ship is only available through purchasing the SSD.
There's two ways this could go in terms of how exclusive the Saber Raven would be.
Either Intel funded full development costs on top of all their other support like Citizencon and providing hardware support to CIG, and the Raven is contractually bound such that CIG can only sell it with Intel products or permission, maybe with a contract expiry limit.
Or, the design is still CIG's property in full, and is being leased out to Intel for a limited time to promote their product while it's still relevant. This means that eventually CIG will open up the design for public sales and the Intel version is just a 'Special Edition'.

CIG would be really stupid to shot themselves in the foot by not allowing the ship to be bought normally from a funding perspective, unless Intel is providing the funding they will lose out on otherwise, but eventually they'll make it available to the public. In the end, how this affects us is that since the ship is currently flyable in 3.0, it'll give those that bought it the chance to play with it before others can, creating a P2W situation maybe.

Still, if you really want to play with one without the SSD, you can always steal one from a player in the verse.

Maybe Intel designed the sabre themselves and just took the name. That would mean SC didnt have to do anything it's completely possible. The benefits for SC would be they got intel hardware, intel press and name, citizencon paid for, and alot of happy SC fans as they get the ship they have always wanted while they get a new SSD(maybe not the worlds greatest SSD but who knows how about we wait for reviews before we judge). Laslty for every optane sold its a free game package which means thats another person who may buy ships from CIG to help fund in the future.(start of the ship buying addiction for people who buy optane and had no plans for SC)

@Gabgrave , to answer your question about availability, you should look to the past at the Mustang Omega. To my knowledge, so far it has not been available to players other than through certain AMD contracted specials. In my opinion, this will most likely be the case with the Saber Raven. I don't like that anymore than you do, especially since there is no additional benefit to the Omega over the Gamma. Where as there is a clear difference between the compositions of the Saber & the Saber Raven.

It is expensive but there is something about IOPs that I do not understand. Samsung 960PRO page shows random reading speeds ranging from those 330k(QD4 so 82.5k per reading thread) to... 15k IOPS. In which conditions it goes down up to 15k??

We aren't, we are upset that CIG is favorably pushing a piece of hardware to its playerbase it can't even really utilize, that also happens to be a worse product in price size storage space and performance than its competitor.

Thats not mentioning the exclusive ship that is better then its original.

*edit*

At least when it was AMD, sure they weren't as powerful as Nvidia, but the price points are much better.
Does the competitor come with a SC ship? No? Didn't think so. Why can the consumers not utilize the SSD? Seems pretty usable to me.

Well, since Black November/Black Friday/Cyber Monday is coming up, odds are can see some good sales on SSDs. Personally, leaning towards a monitor, but failing that, gonna grab an NVMe drive for my system and save up for a good display.

As this is a new technology it is still fairly in its infancy. Will it become much more impressive as it matures? Well, if they don't get sales in the infancy of the product it won't mature because they need to make a profit to be able to progress the technology. If no one buys it, it will stall and we'll never know if it could one day become something five times better.

I have no idea how the 960PRO works, but I expect it to be the pinicle of an already mature technology. If Obtain is that good in its infancy, then it can only mean good things for the future. However unless they can help sales that future may never happen.

Queue SC tie-in and Newegg selling out of all sizes of drive. Ta-daa!

CIG supporting and experimenting with new upcoming technologies? I must admit, that sounds exactly like them.

You know where we hear this argument a lot? Console exclusives. Think really hard about what you just advocated for.

"It doesn't matter that its the worse option , it has this exclusive!"

Why can the consumers not utilize the SSD? Seems pretty usable to me.
The main benefit of the 900p is its random read / write IOPS. You are only concerned with that level of IOPS for constant short hops , like what you would see in say a syslog server that needs to write a whole bunch of random data coming in, or a SIEM server that has to read through a bunch of data buckets in a short amount of time.

Basically we as consumers get exactly 0 benefit out of it.

*edit*

While the same could be said about the 960pro SSD since you really don't utilize its speed any more over a normal SSD unless you do large data transfers, at the very least its cheaper, holds more storage, and is smaller.
